Steralising Casing Soil

I was looking for a good method to steralise my casing soil.  It's a 50/50 layer.

I don't have a pressure cooker or microwave.  :frown:

I do have some quart mason jars, but steralising them in the pot would take forever.  I'd have put a brick on top of them (inside the pot) to keep em from floating around.

Bake at 250 degrees for two hours.

Should I add the water before I bake it, or add pasterised water afterwards?.

Add the water before you bake. Later, you may need to add water that evaporated.

If you add the water before you bake, the temperature of the casing will not go much above 100C until the water evaporates. Soak the soil for 24 hours and then bake it at 350F until dry. Once it is dry, continue baking at 350F for at least one hour and up to three hours. You will have to rehydrate the soil before you can case with it. Be sure to use sterilized water when you rehydrate. Since you lack a PC you will probably be fine boiling distilled water for 15 minutes.
