Hey Syle, thanks for your concern i appreciate it . Latest news is he is slowly waking up, is responsive ie. doctors told him to move his legs and arms and he was able too so thats good.

He spoke his first words today but they were slurred and he had trouble stringing together a sentence but its a start hey....

The biopsy came back from his brain and it was negative, doctors are still not sure what caused all this but from what they have said he is on the mend, so hopefully it is only positive news from here....

Hey man your not bugging me at all i appreciate your concern!!

He is still in hospital and unfortunately is blind :frown: Not 100% but cant see anything but faint shadows and outlines :frown: Its sad because he is only 20 but hey, he is alive thats the main thing.

Doctors STILL dont know why this has all happened, but he is on the mend. He cant control his right arm either, we have been giving him little foam balls to build strength with and he rips them all apart, uncontrollably which is quite weird but hey, he could be worse.

Thanks for your concern Syle it means alot!

Hey man, thanks for your concern

I dont see him very much anymore, but last time i saw him, he had a full head helmet on (half of his skull has been removed) and was talkative and almost like his old self. He is at home but is still partially blind, and gets tired very very easily. Still seems to be the same person underneath, but with what he has gone through i dont blame him for being a tad different.

First the doctors said he will never gain any vision back, and now he has most vision except peripheral, so anything is possible from here on in my opinion.

Time will tell i guess.

Once again, thanks for your concern it means a lot.

I'm sorry not to have seen this before but did anyone bother to do a blood culture/morphology study to rule out microbes, yeast or massive bacterial infection?

The key to brain injuries is to use it and to keep using it! Even if you aren't able to do something, visualizing it has been proven to help.

Before I could move my hand again, I would visualize moving it when I was falling to sleep. I would imagine my hand moving so hard that I could feel it moving (it wasn't). I can only speak for localized damage due to stroke, but I can definitely say visualizing works!

Perhaps if your friend, with his eyes closed, imagined he had all his vision...he would get some of it back.

Thanks for the kind words.

curenado, he was in ICU for 3 months and then in hospital for a further 4 in one of the best hospitals in Australia, so im sure they did all necessary tests, but to this day they are still baffled as to what caused it.

Trendal, since he has come out he has improved tenfold. First the doctors said he was permanently blind, now he can kick a soccer ball with near full vision (no periphery as yet) and can generally walk on his own un-aided, so i have high hopes for him in the future. It can only get better from here!

Yeah, cheers dude. It was and still is strange, having a mate that was once actively involved in sport and just like us to be disabled and need a carer to help him every day.

When you say was the seizure induced purposely, what do you mean?

By the doctors?

This isn't possible, as the first seizure was in a hotel room before he was even taken to a hospital and seen by a doctor. I know he wasn't in any fights for the few months leading up to this, but whether he is a violent sleeper or not, i really cannot say.

Stroke, infection, aneurysm etc, were all ruled out as possible causes. He has been out of hospital for about 2-3 months now, and is almost ready to have the chunk of skull they took out put back in. Right now he is wearing a full head helmet, so it will be a big step for him image wise. Hopefully he can put it behind him and try and find some normality in his life.

Thanks heaps for your comments

Definitely not man. He was in the hotel with his girlfriend for their 2 or 3 year anniversary, cant remember which one it was. Not to diss her in any way, but she isn't the sharpest tool in the shed so i doubt she would know how to do such a thing anyway hehe.

Had your friend been in the ocean (swimming, snorkeling, etc) prior to any of this?

wait.... he had his first seizure, and the first thing they did was ASSUME he had epilepsy, and simply wait till he had another one before they gave him a CT scan or ran a blood test to rule out the possibility of tetanus? WTF????

and they ruled out encephalitis but his brain started swelling? dude... encephalitis IS swelling of the brain!

CT scans can miss hemmorhage or tumor, especially in the temporal lobes, 70-80% of the time. Your friend should really get an MRI done (it is much more accurate)--before an EEG--to see any physiological damage that could be taking place.

Does your friend drink a lot of alcohol?

edit: I just read the update... that is really terrible, what happened to him--being handicapped, the loss of vision. luckily your friend was still young, so he was able to recover... if he keeps being active, he will fully recover im sure.
