are you unhappy?
do you think the ratio between happy people and unhappy people has changed much over the last century or so?
there will be happy people for as long as we exist....i hope.

1. Evolution is not about happy/unhappy. The organism which survives long enough to pass on its' genetic material wins, whether it was happy or not.
2. If what you really meant to say was "is unhappiness a catalyst for material progress and innovation," then yes, it seems to be. The trouble is, we don't really get happier from having more stuff, or from living longer, or from being able to view the rings of Saturn online. We fool ourselves into believing that the obstacles to our happiness exist outside our own minds, and that we can overcome them with fancy toys and medical advances. Big mistake.

why again does it seem that unhappiness is a catalyst?
where the creators or the people who conceived of these new things/ideas unhappy? Do we get less happy from having more stuff or living longer?

We don't get less happy, but we also don't get more happy. The trick, as I see it, is to figure out how to appreciate just being alive.
Unhappiness is a catalyst because we want to fix it. We see our negative state as something broken, and figure that maybe a better vacuum cleaner or a cure for cancer will patch it up. After the novelty of our new toy wears off, we go back to making ourselves miserable & thinking up new toys.

Fuck it. I'm into the bird's eye view. Me and that flying dog have some work to do. Who's into a never ending story?? Atreyu!! Atreyu!!
"To the viewer/reader, he is a metafictional character who becomes a fictional character as he exists for real in the story. Atreyu's name means "son of all" in his language. In the novel, Atreyu was summoned by the Childlike Empress to embark on a quest to save the land of Fantastica (called "Fantasia" in the film adaptation). During Atreyu's quest, his horse, Artax, falls victim to the Swamps of Sadness while Atreyu is protected by the Auryn. Bastian follows Atreyu's character in the "real world" while he reads "The Neverending Story"." -Wiki
Loved it as a kid.

would we have to see out state as something that is broken...why not something that can be improved upon? like infinity...i'm not sure if perfectness exists.
being happy with the certain state doesn't mean it is the happiest state. i don't want to give that much credit to unhappyness

That's why i stick to the basics: Food, water, work, sleep, sex...and shroomery.

Both happiness and depression are a result of an organism having free time after maintaining homeostasis. People of our age, on the whole, are probably happier than they were 100 years ago. Why? Because they are less constrained and more oblivious.
