Rehydrate before Agar?

Hey Guys 'n Gals,

I'm wondering, is it worth waiting to rehydrate 1 year old spores before inoculating Agar with them?

Rehydrating adds more steps, therefore more chances for contamination. It also takes an additional 24 hours. I guess the question is if typically the rehydrating would either be necessary or give the spores a start that would be better than the 24 hours lost.

I usually don't pre-hydrate unless the spores are a few years old. I make up for it by making the agar a bit on the wet side. Simply use about 2/3 the amount of agar agar that the recipe you're using calls for. Good luck.
