Metal, socially unacceptable?
    #7335830 -

Metal is not acceptable for its views. It is masculine, assertive, and warlike. It does not use an accepted structure for controllable mainstream music. It does not attempt to distract. It's a war call. And socialized people don't like that.

Metal doesn't have political views, but it has ideological life values that conflict with modern society. Control is how we make money. Control is how we force other people to be our wives, friends, neighbors. Control is usurped by the independent, holistic-moral warrior.

Metal, socially unacceptable for its values? - death metal blog

I've found this to be somewhat true just from listening to people try to hear metal for the first time. If it's heavy metal, they're more relaxed. Death metal they don't even know how to follow. It sounds random to them, confusing and like its going in every direction at once. And then once they see the songs are about death and war, and aren't laments, they get worried. It doesn't fit into the moral paradigm, by sound or by sense. Metal is war, ideological values war against the sheeplike mentality.

No, it just sucks. Not all of it, but as a genre, its undesirable because...well it just sucks (IMO). Metal is like mainstream rap. Except no musical/beat structure. Screaming about shit that doesnt complete any thoughts or point, it just sounds cool (lyrics a 14 yr old on xanax could write). Again, im not bashing all metal artists, just the genre in general.

I'm gonna go ahead and just say this: Metal is not totally socially acceptable because it's on par with Dungeons and Dragons as far as common interest goes. It's a crazy, angry fantasy world and I'd rather listen to something that has a more solid ground in my reality.

I know there's metal that doesn't have to do with any fantasy at all, but the majority of modern metal coming out still features vocals that either a) sound like people are trying to be monsters, or b) suck the ass that the 80s left behind.

With that said, I do enjoy some metal from time to time. Noisy mathrock interests my ears more, but I'll even get down with some grindcore / powerviolence once in a while.

Conservationist, do you post your propaganda on every fucking forum? As for djcube, you're either unable to hear the musical/beat structure and completed thoughts or you're incapable of understanding it.

jonnywax, even the "metal" (quoted to imply all sub-genres) that does deal with fantasy (I assume you're referring to Power Metal and/or Black Metal) usually has a basis in reality.

Even the stuff that doesn't deal with fantasy is "on par" with D&D to me, like I said, for public interest. I listen to a lot of noise music, it's the same way. I don't mean there has to be dragons involved. Just that the crowd that wants to appreciate something that difficult to immediately catch onto is generally smaller than the booty-bass loving mass.

if you can't hear the "beat" in metal or in any musical genre then i feel sad for you. the beat is in the listener, not in the sound so if you can't catch that then f u.

Do you know what a beat pattern is? Metal is unstructured and chaotic. Its not 4/4 or 2/2 or 303, ect. Here are some random lyrics from the band Atreyu:

Strength comes from within, not from above

You do not giveth
Therefore you cannot taketh away
No being is my master
I am not a spiritual slave

Heavenly father
Rightous son
Holy Ghost
Fiction

In my brethren love and freinds
I need no divinity on which to urge my soul

Strength comes from within, not from above

Are you implying that metal has a free rhythm like in free jazz?   Who are you trying to bullshit here, us or yourself?
Edit: Oh I see you are anti-metal, well metal definitely has a very defined rhythmic structure.  The time signature or tempo might change, but it is well defined

yeah, people who talk shit about metal never know any metal bands. they're just anal about "rhythm" and musical theory stuff - never tolerant enough to LISTEN.

Oh sorry, maby i should have posted some cradle of filth lyrics. I just googled metal lyrics and that came up, so apparently it is metal to some people. Either way, it sucks in most cases. And I am tolerant, i specifically said that I dont hate all metal, but the genre in general. Time signature and tempo is what makes structure, so no, it doesnt have structure.

Or music is subjective and you're just too retarded to figure that out.

i still don't understand your point. listen to that song i posted and explain how exactly is it lacking structure. or post and example of a structured song. not trying to bust you balls or anything, i just don't understand what you mean.

I don't really listen to metal, but that doesn't mean I would go and tell someone they shouldn't like it for the reasons I don't. If the music makes you feel good or whatever it is you get from listening to music, then go right ahead and listen to it as much as you like. I don't expect anyone to like half the music I listen to. Hell I don't expect them to like any.

I'm not gonna be sitting there on the bus or whatever and start judging some guy for listening to metal on his headphones. If you want to listen to it I wouldn't be the one to stop you and start preaching why my music is better than yours.

It seems like you're debating over opinions rather than facts.

That's pretty much what musical debate ends up boiling down to, which is why I try and avoid it.
