Hehe, SOME metalcore is pretty good. I don't mean Atreyu, Killswitch or As I Lay Dying though. As usual metalcore has saturated the market resulting in thousands of bullshit clones that all sound the same. Every so often, there'll be one of two that manage to pull it off. Thankfully, I keep my diet of metal WAY across the board of sub genres. This way, I avoid the pitfalls of sub genres that end up becoming the flavour of the year and exploited by MTV.
Dig deeper fellas!
At the moment, I've been listening to a bit of Boris. My fav genres these days are the more grind type ones and the ones that border on insanity. Also doom (drone, classic, psychedelic and any other sub-genres within the doom area).
A list of the bands I've been previewing lately and my fav picks of the year
YOB Electric Wizard Lull Rumpelstilken Grinder Leng T'Che Nasum Boris Capricorns Blut Aus Nord Sigh Aura Noir Monolithe OM
There's tonnes more, but I download more than I can listen to - so it's a bit difficult keeping track

Try Norma Jean or The Chariot if you dont like those so called "clones". Sometimes it's more than just the music that counts the most. Try looking up killswitch engage's history...the very first album they were considered under a "christian name". Lyrics and messages is what counts the most in my opinon. And As I Lay Dying's "frail words collapse", very song on that album has to do with God. Were do you get this metalcore marketing from? Last I heard metal was still an underground thing.

The new Agalloch album is fantastic. If you've never heard of them, you need to check it out.

I have heard Killswitch Engage's albums (all of them, including their early album before the debut) and I dislike As I Lay Dying. Norma Jean and The Chariot are OK, but not really my cup of tea (I have a friend who loves these 2 bands).
Where do I get this metalcore marketing from? Well, check out Roadrunner's bandlist (from nu metal to metalcore...hmmm, I like some Roadrunner artists, but they tend to create hysteria out of "new" sounds and proceed to release thousands of bands under this "new" genre".
Last you heard metal was an underground thing? Depends what genre you're talking about! This new wave of American heavy metal (or metalcore - whatever it is) is hardly underground. I'm not trying to be elitist here, but I'd hardly call Killswitch Engage and company underground. The underground that I know of consists of bands no ones ever heard, never appeared on MTV, play in front of audiences of about 100 people and release albums burnt onto CD-Rs.
That's not to say that any metal that is commercial (or just well known) is crap. I enjoy some bands like Lamb of God, despite them being lumped into metalcore (hey, if I like something, I like it regardless of label). It's just that metalcore is the latest hysteria (remember nu metal?) that is extremely popular with all the kids - give a few years before the bubble bursts and all those metalcore bands will either die out or have to evolve.
Mind you, metalcore was around long before the last few years. Check out bands like Agnostic Front for old school metalcore.
I'm out of time, so I've gotta cut this post short.

SIGH = My all time favourite band ever!! So diverse. Been listenin to Necrophagist and siKth lately. Not really impressed with Sitkh's new album.
I don't listen to as much metal as I used to. I used to download so many bands (Audiogalaxy's Metal group ) but now I kinda feel like I've touched upon most of the good stuff out there and don't hunt as much new stuff out. I mean what can top 'Pandemonic Hyperblast' and how many black metal bands are out there that DON'T sound like Mayhem?
I feel quite out of touch for new music, everything's too generic. MTV is just lame and when I read Blabbermouth and it's all roadrunner/metalcore etc. My other main source of metal has gone too Totalrock on digital radio
What's everyone using for file sharing? I've been using Limewire but it's got a pretty fucking shit seclection/search facility.

I hear you about the difficulty in finding fresh and new metal out there. I've always just relied on back of magazine reviews/interviews, website zines (Ultimate Metal is a good one), word of mouth (on here or other forums - or from friends), browsing people's lists on Soulseek that have similar tastes and randomly downloading any album I just happen to pick, or on the DC++ hub (Grindovermatter). A great magazine for non-MTV metal and other extreme genres that aren't quite metal is Terrorizer. Usually I browse the CD reviews in the back section and write down each artist that sounds like it could be worth a listen - then I jump online and search out what I can find. Or if I've heard really good things about a band and see it at the shop during a CD buying spree, I'll give it a shot (that's what I did with Sigh ). Ultimate Metal is pretty good too - has reviews, interviews, bands to watch etc and is underground orientated. That has it's flipside as some of the mentioned bands are near impossible to find.
As for download clients and P2P, I'd recommend Soulseek. It does have it's problems (seems to slow down the computer if left running for a long period of time), but works generally. When it does work, you can find a lot of good stuff on there and mostly full albums (depending on how rare the artist is). A better download tool is DirectClient (DC++) or any similar program. Only downside is you need a reasonably large file share to access some hubs. www.grindovermatter.com is the hub I frequent, and although it's generally a Grind metal hub, there's heaps of other good stuff on there. And they're not assholes either - just read the rules.
Keep searching - just keep an ear to the ground. Every so often, one of those bands pop up that you've been searching for.

Yeah bro, they were great. I like "Paegan terrorism tactics" more, at least I remember liking it more, but I lost it. I have never seen it at any of the local shops, nor have I found any more than 2 or 3 songs from it on any P2P/filesharing programs.
