Why meditate on the tip of the nose?
    #7334091 -

I hate watching my breath there...it seems so hard. What I like to do best is try to keep my body very still and follow the breath down to the diaphragm. It works pretty well for me except I have pretty much stalled on my progress.

I was thinking a guide to meditation might help me, so I looked into Mindfulness in Plain English and tried to start watching the breath at the nostrils, which seems very foundational to the guide. But it seems so unpleasant and gives me a headache.

do whats right for you
the reason people usually focus on the nostrils during vipassana is because it is easiest to be aware of, some people find it harder to keep track of their breathing from their diaphragm or stomach or chest
since thats not an issue for you, i think youre fine

Maybe you should try some kundalini pranayama breathing exersises and see how that works for ya.

It's not really about what you keep your attention on, it's just about obtaining single-mindedness, then dropping the single-mindedness into no-mind. I usually will put all of my awareness into the palms of my hands. It works for me, and that's why I do it. Like SampaJasll said above, do what's right for you.

Do you feel like you make continual progress (more or less) with your hand meditation?

Following the whole breath does work for me, but only so well. I am wondering if the problem is that I am not concentrating on one point.

Using my hands technique, I've gone deeper into the meditation process than without the hands technique. Again though, it's like crossing a river in a boat. Eventually, you must leave the boat behind to continue down the path. That's when you drop the single-mindedness into no-mind. The hand method gets me to no-mind. It hasn't helped me any further than that, because it's no longer present. But I've considered it beneficial.

Some would argue that this is a matter of perspective.  :strokebeard:  :chew:

nostrils are too much about changing air paths, and it will make you woozy.
anyway, until you begin you won't know what I mean and after it won't matter.
progress is just what sticks.

I definitely do not know what you mean.

Maybe the nostril thing sort of.
But I'm pretty sure my attention flies right past the tip.

Until I begin?
I guess that part doesn't matter.

well, I have been experimenting

I am finding when I try to concentrate on the tip of the nose that I don't know if I am really concentrating on it or if I am imagining my concentration on it

I should be perceiving actual sensation on my nose, right? But there seems to be very little sensation at the tip.

Also since this is so difficult to perceive I feel like it detracts from attention on breathing, and the breath may speed up or my torso muscles become more tense.

I feel like the blackness in front of my eyes might be easier. Should this work as the "point" of focus??

it is easy enough as it is.

Have you ever taken time to feel the air leaving your nostrils?
it is centered at the tip of my nose, if I do so..

I guess it have to do with some nerves..

I have been browsing through a couple guides to make sense of redgreenvines, and it seems that depending on the shape of your nose it is either centered at the tip or on the upper lip.

For me it is more the upper lip. I was confused as to why he would suggest a point outside of my path of breath; hopefully the suggestion was meant for whatever the endpoint of breath is. Or else I am really confused.

The blackness might work, until it is no longer blackness. I've had "closed eyed visuals" of geometric shapes and colors swarming about, much like tripping. That might be too distracting.

Try the tip of you penis. That's for the real "hardcore" meditators.

No headaches, no unpleasantness, may be a hard on.

really
tip of nose is right for vipassana
it is not disturbed by flowing of breath
the breath is followed by mind not sensation.
(begginning middle end on in breath and berginning middle end on out breath)
very simple.
you build the sensation internally like a chakkra but less mythological, less head games.
if you must
put your finger there once and press a bit at the beginning just to get it started.
everyone is subject to it simmilarly.
if your nose has been removed use the point where it had been.
