meditating
    #4063866 - 04/17/05 12:33 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I'm new to meditating, haven't done it yet but I want to learn.  It seems like something I would like.  I do yoga on a daily basis, as of last month.  It calms me way down and puts me in a good mindset + flexibility .  Anyways,  I was curious if anyone had any good websites for it (I've already googled it)?  And has any one here ever meditated while tripping and if so, how was it?

meditation is pretty simple. i think people try to complicate it with more detail (i am guilty of this).

here's what i suggest. sit down, when you aren't hungry, or right after a meal (you're digestive processes interrupt), when you aren't tired, and your mind isn't too racy. i find crossing the legs helps, and half-lotus seems to help me focus more (i didn't believe in this until i tried it, but i feel more centered/balanced)

begin following your breath. follow the pattern. try to keep your mind focused on that. at first it might seem boring or pointless. it gets somewhere. or rather, you realize you've been there, and then you open your eyes (metaphorically speaking). anyways, if your mind strays, just observe that, and bring it back to the breath. focus on all your body if you wish. untense every muscle. go back to the breath. follow the breath. just sit, and breathe.

they say to do it twice a day, every day. i got pretty good results doing it once a day sporadically (i should have been more dedicated, but hey, nobody's perfect ).

when it is a long breath, mentally note "a long breath"

when it is a short breath, mentally note "a short breath"

following the breath is enhanced by feeling an area at the tip of the nose (feels like a coin putting a slight pressure there)

- during the in breath follow "beginning, middle , end"
- during the out breath follow "beginning, middle, end"

if you make a mistake calling the end of the breath the begginning move on, let go of the little error.

if the attention wanders, gently return - quite simple.
(this is the essence of burmese vipassana meditation)

oh, and breathe through the nose (and i've read to leave the mouth open a little bit, just for comfort. seems to do be good). but yea, breathe through the nose, and into the belly. feel the lungs expand down and a bit out. this is the most efficient breath (i believe). sometimes the breath will not do this. don't force it, just wait for the next one.

breathing brings great pleasure.

as mentioned, posture and breathing are important.
I usually lie down to meditate, or am already lying down when I remember to meditate, also some times I have to breathe through mouth. - no problem - it still works, the mind is formless and meditation can fit all shapes.

all of the other details amount to content, the method of attention remains the same.

I do not mean to trivialize posture, it carries more aspects than just content. to sit as the buddhas have sat, symbolically conveys to self, and any observer, a message of this ages old reflective method.

the message is a kind of resonance that has merit: both encouragement and questioning are raised.

there is also a not so subtle energy ride by sitting erect with spine aligned and keeping still.

In my world, by using any pose, cynical relatives are not motivated to re-inforce their resistance to eastern philosophy, and I avoid meaningless conversations about superman while continuing in clark kent's glasses - so to speak.

some people are like that i guess.

i definitely do not think any specific pose is necessary to meditate.
