8ft Tall Incubator?
    #7297515 -

My buddy and I are tired of coolers and heat bombs so we are

attempting to create a 8ft tall incubator. Anyone got any good ideas

how to keep this monster at 86? We were thinking thermostat and a

lamp but are unsure. The thing is lined in foam board so it should be

well insulated. These pics were before the shelves. There are 8 now.

HELP NEEDED!

heat the room to 70+ and put jars in there, problemo solved.

The thermostat is the least expensive, single pole version I could
find. Maybe Home Depot but I could not find anything inexpensive
in my local store so I picked one up from Lowes.

This isn't my set-up but I'm just trying to help with ideas.

Incubators are a waste of time and money unless your area is below 70. I colonize in full light right on a shelf. LC colonizes in less than 2 weeks.

Here is something you could use without much modification
and is under $30 at homedepot.

Quote:
Ductstat Electronic thermostat gives automatic on-off control of INDUCTOR Duct Fans. Also controls 110 volt lights, dampers, fans, etc. 3 user-adjustable controls: operation, temperature setting & sensitivity. Thermostat range exceeds 50 deg. F to 100 deg. F to meet a wide range of applications. Replaceable fuse for safety. Grounded power cord & switched outlet. 10 amp resistive, 5 amp inductive load capability. 3 full year limited warranty. UL & ULC listed, conforms to ANSI/UL Standard 705 & CSA Standard 22.2. Housing is flame-retardant, high-impact ABS.

* Temperature range: 40 F to 110 F. Rated at 5 Amps.

Quote:
If your application is high voltage (120 to 240 volts) and you require a thermostat to control the unit then we have the solution for you. This double pole unit will work with most 120v – 240v (at a maximum of 16 amps) applications. These include wall heater, base board electric heat etc. Installs easily into a standard junction box. The unit is fully digital and uses no mercury so it is environmentally safe and more accurate the mechanical thermostats. Simple to operate just turn the dial to the desired temperature. Comes with a 3 year warranty.

* Double pole 110 / 220 Volt systems, maximum current 16 amps

They both can handle any loads up to 5amps-16amps, so a 100watt or
even higher wattage light bulb is perfect.. The one above is just
easier to working with, without much modification. Otherwise you will
be splicing wires with the other thermostat at risk of fire or shock.
Make sure you know what you are doing when dealing with line-voltages
up to 110v/220v, cause getting shocked/electrocuted sure as hell isn't fun.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

i only use incubators in the winter.

i think the best way to heat would be use a heater on a therm. it's 8 feet tall. a lightbulb isnt going to cut it, and would be ineffecient.

People still use incubators? Seems like you wasted a lot of time and energy. You should turn it into a green house.

First off why are you making an 8 Ft. tall incubator? I could see it as a Fruiting chamber because jars dont take up that much room unlike when you are trying to fruit them they take up more room. The first thing I'd say to do is get rid of the white styro-foam board because that aint going to do shit because the R-value of that shit is low. If you are going to be putting up foam board go with the pink stuff from Owens Corning. For keeping it to the correct temp I would suggest to get a little hand heater or a space heater and modify it some how.

The foam board is made to insulate and it stay close to 80 without

any sort of added heat because it is sealed so tight. In the winter I

know this wont be the case so I want to regulate it somehow so its

constant. The reason for having one this big is for trays of poo.

Thanks for the ideas!

Hmmm incubation goin vertical eh? Well I suppose you're making the best use of cubic feet. Heat rises, where is your thermostat? If you're heating at 80 I'm sure your Jars might be near fryin man! Thatis going to produce quite a bit of ambient temp...I'd either put the thermostat at the top and/or lower the overall temp a bit by 5 degrees, possibly introduce a CHEAP effect fan for a little circulation, in the sense of heat/temp??? CPU fan perhaps pointing down? Just be careful not to fry em man, we'd all hate to see so many casualties! War is hell.

You don't want it over 80F, ever. Trust me. 86 is the ideal temp as per Stamets, but that's the internal temp. Your surrounding air temp should be 78-80F, ideally.

72 and up is fine, too. Not as good as 80F, but it doesn't take more than a couple of days longer. Try it and see, and spend your time building greenhouses instead of incubators.

i have grown quite a bit and have noticed a fairly big difference in

colonization times when the temp is between 85-90. Now i know thats

not what everyone says is the right temp but its what ive found to be

the fastest. And as far as GHs go I have plenty of room. I like

having projects and bigger better things to do with this hobby.

Didn't think i would get so much flack outta just having fun with

something.

It's not flack, it's relaying information to you. It's going to be an engineering problem to regulate heat from top to bottom. Without a fan that can circulate vertically, you'll see up to a 10F differential between lower and top shelves. A substrate temperature over 84F actually slows down growth. Thus, any ambient temp over 81 for jars or 78 for trays of manure, and you're slowing down mycelium growth while promoting bacteria and thermophilic fungi.

Drill a hole in the top put a 5" fan with duct work
recirculating the heat from the top to the bottom.

Could even created another wooden channel for the air to flow.

So two 5" holes one up top, and bottom, either can house the fan.
Duct work external to the box, they even have insulated versions.

Simply to move the air. Nothing complicated, could even be low-voltage
computer fan/fans.

Problem Solved: Easy means of distributing the internal heat of the incubator.

While this might be a fun engineering project, it's so piss-poor for cultivation that I think it can scarcely be called a cultivation topic at all. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

People working with PF and Stamets alone are getting bad info from the start; once you get tied up in thinking about incubation as a beginner, it takes a while to get that kind of idea out of your head.

But again, whatever floats your boat.

I'm new here. so if I'm way off just let me know. But why not just use a grow rack? It seems much cheaper than building an 8 feet tall incubator.

You're not way off, you're spot-on. A grow rack, or any kind of rack, or a cardboard box under your bed--it's all the same. Apparently this guy thinks 90F is good for cubes, meaning he hasn't been at it much longer than you have (or else he's stubborn enough never to have varied his methods to find which actually works better).

how can it be "piss poor for cultivation". Incubate 40 trays of poo at one time? I am not a beginner i have been growing well over 2 years now. I have never had enough room for trays. I am going to use fans and a thermo for temp control. I figured it would be like a big re-fridge tek. Stick to your coolers and heat bombs, or your tub in tubs. I will do one run and have twice what you do.

Re: 8ft Tall Incubator? [Re: NewFungiGrower]

I'm talking about incubation altogether. You're working under the faulty assumption that it's necessary. Stamets puts the ideal temperature at 86, but while that's been proven to be close to the ideal internal temp, it's also shown to be a terrible external air temperature, which is all most cultivators have the ability to measure. Mycelium produces its own metabolic heat. 90F is a much better temperature for growing bacteria and certain molds than it is for growing cubensis. I used to incubate too, and since cutting it out my stall rate has dropped dramatically while my average colonization time has decreased even more.

People assume that because this is a technical hobby that you always have to be doing something to your colonizing substrate. As it happens, ideal cubensis growth parameters are only slightly higher than room temperature, and nowhere near the 90s. Just because it feels extra-"sciencey" doesn't make it good practice.

In short: You're wasting your time. I'm sure you're displeased to hear it, but don't take it from me: Run some other jars/trays at 78-80F at the same time as an experiment and learn for yourself. Be objective about it, and don't assume your initial hypothesis is correct until you have results. Then ask whether all this nonsense is worth your time and effort.

Or don't. But if you come to ask whether this 8' incubator is a good idea, don't be surprised when someone tells you (justly) that no incubator is a good idea except when it is necessary to get your cubes in the mid-upper 70s or very low 80s.
