Reishi I forgot I had
    #7271451 -

I picked these mushrooms, which I think is Reishi about 7 months ago sat them on a high shelf and forgot about them. The pictures are from today not 7 months ago, they seem very preserved. I got these off of a decaying plum tree stump in Florida and there is more starting to grow on it now, however they are very small and some got green stuff on them. Two questions, first of all can someone confirm that this is Reishi? They are hard as hell, like a hard rubber and they have been that way since I picked them. Also are they still good to eat / make a herbal tea out of? I know reishi is good for you but not exactly what all it will do to you. I am all for healthy herbalism, if nothing else guess I got some petrified mushroom trophies to hang upside down from my ceiling fan cords.

Thanks for the help, here is the pics. I am trying to learn to take good pictures, sorry if these suck.

If the varnished parts are shiny, you have Reishi. Probably still good.

What should i do with these rock hard things to extract the minerals, steep in some hot water for a few hours? Stick them in a bottle of rum? Any ideas?

Grind them up to a fine powder with a cheese grater or coffee grinder, then make tea with very hot water.

Many people suspect that species of Ganoderma other than just lucidum have the same effect. Others think that reishi has effect but not other Ganodermas, while others think that none of them have any effect.

I consider all three possibilities equally likely to be true.

How much tea should I make with two of these things? Lets say for each tablespoon of Reishi how much cups of water do I brew it with?
Thanks everyone for all the great answers.

They look like a Ganoderma species, and many people make tea from various species.

With older specimens, especially wild older specimens, you should check for bark beetles. Bark beetles love those mushrooms, so if they feel very light weight, delicate, and have saw dust looking stuff in or around, they may be infested.
Unless you like mushroom and beetle tea, in which case, this step can be skipped.

Probably 1 tablespoon - 1 teaspoon of reishi powder to 1 cup, 8oz of water, but it you prefer it stronger, there is no ill effects. So it's kind of your own preference.

What about the stems, do I grind them up to? They are so thick and would provide a lot of powder.

In addition to Ganoderma, many genera within the family of Polyporaceae have purported medicinal properties. Trametes (ubiquitous woodland mushrooms) and Grifola, immediately come to mind.

Lich... you can use the stems as well.

Personally, I recommend all medicinal mushrooms be consumed in conjunction with cigarettes and something richly amended with high fructose corn syrup. :crazy2:

OK, then I am going to take everyones advice and grind them up with a cheese grader and use 1 teaspoon to 2 teaspoons per cup of tea. Does it matter how I store this stuff, in a glass tube with a quark on the shelf fine? Or is the chemicals reduced by light over time?

My first finished Mushroom project. Finally something I can actually use. Found out I need a better cheese grater that stuff is hard.
Here is a pic of the finished project and I got my first glass brewing now.

A coffee grinder worked much better for me than I expected - It turned the stuff into soft fluffy stuff, like brown cotton.

I recommend that everyone have a not-for-coffee coffee grinder for herbs and mushrooms. Its really handy every time I want to cook with dried candy caps.

Yeah, it is good to have a coffee grinder for other things, other than coffee, since coffee is a very distinctive flavour and scent.

Lich, is that a tattoo of a dragon hatching out of an egg?? Why?

Yeah its a tat of a baby drag hatching. I got it because i believe that all humans and and other creatures are made from the blood of the dragon falling to the earth, so we are all hatching dragons. Just most never break thru the shell.
