Melky Cabrera Appreciation Thread

I can't explain to you guys how much I love Melky Cabrera. When he first came up in 2005, relieving Bernie Williams in Center Field for a bit, he looked like a mess, a trainwreck. He was a wreck in the field and lost at the plate. I despised him...probably because I loved (and love) Bernie so much.

But then last year he came up big so many times. It was him that hit the double off Papelbon in the key game of that five-game Boston Massacre, before Jeter drove him in to blow the save. And now he's our starting center fielder and I couldn't be happier. I think Damon's gonna be wearing a new uniform next season.

but i agree with the trainwreck comment...because that is exactly what he was. i saw a good portion of his minor league career, and he was miserable both in he field and at the plate....so when he did get called up to the bigs...i was truly shocked, because plain and simple he was horrible. but since then he had adjusted into a very reliable glove and force at the plate

I really wonder what the offseason plan is.  Because Right Field and Center are question marks. You have to wonder what this season is for Damon. The beginning of a downward injured spiral, or a bad year before a resurgence year...I wonder. Last year he set a career high in homers, I wonder if that was his swan song. Do they ship off Damon and put Melky in center? And then do they re-sign Abreu in right? Because I thought the plan was to slot Melky in right after Abreu's contract ran out this year...

i would rather see Damon stick around as opposed to Abreu...even though I absolutly HATE both players. Abreu is an overpayed rich mans version of any other ball player who gets on base...and comes up small in big spots. at least Damon has won something before.....bue he is still a fucking red sock so to hell with him

Torii Hunter's gonna be on the free agent market, but I'd be wary of giving him any sort of long term deal considering what he puts his body through - he's going for a big payday too, having a career year for sure. Ichiro got locked up, which means Hunter and Andruw Jones are the two biggest names in the outfield heading for the free agent market. I'll pass on either..

The best thing about Melky is he doesn't turn 23 until next week. He might be something someday. He's OK now. Torii Hunter is an excellent player who has been both under and over estimated (obviously by different groups) in his career. He's putting up the best year of his career but may be wearing down again. A risk at 32 but not a bad one. The biggest stories on the Yanks are the turnaround of Cano and Matsui (fuck you, this will not last and stop chewing on my ankles). Oh and Rodriguez just hit 500 on the first pitch he saw.

Coming into today Melky was hitting .292..

So far today he is 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, pushing his average up to .298. I love you Melky. /swoon
