Johan Santana to the Yankees?

I think this would be awesome... but who would we have to give up to get him? Hopefully we can lock him down for a solid deal that doesn't strip us of too much young talent.

Hughes, Melkman, and a minor league center fielder, forget his name. That's what I've been hearing anyway.
Did you guys resign Pettitte yet? It'd be great to have another top lefty in your lineup. Them along with Wang would make the Yanks really tough next year.
Plus it gets that asshole out of the AL Central.

Ian Kennedy + Melky Cabrera + at LEAST 2 other minor league prospects. THe YAnkees will push hard to not have to give up Hughes AND Kennedy (and they won't give up Joba Chamberlain at all, I truly believe that) but I believe that if, while talking to the Twins, they can talk Johan into what they believe is an optimal contract extension they would be willing to let go of Hughes as well. I hope not. DOn't forget though, the Yankees farm system is now incredibly deep. They've got top notch prospects coming out the wazoo.
I love Melky Cabrera, he's one of my favorite young players and one of my favorite Yankees and a real clubhouse spark and presence. I think trading him will truly bum out Robinson Cano.
That being said, a Johan Santana trade would mean 2008 + another 7 years or so. THat's 8 fucking years of A-Rod manning 3rd (or maybe moving to short when Jeter's too banged up to play it anymore?....) and 8 years of Johan Santana trotting out to the mound every five days.
I'd give up Melky for that, gladly!

I think the deal is pretty clearly going to have to include Melky and one of either Hughes or Kennedy plus a minor leaguer. Also at least a 5 year deal at who knows how much, he turned down 4 for 80 from the Twins, which is nuts. Me? I wouldn't do it. Money OR talent, not both. I wouldn't worry too much about the Sawx either, I think they're too strapped for that kind of dough.
Pettitte still hasn't decided whether he wants to pitch yet. We should know by the end of December

I don't think he'll wind up with the Sox either - the Twins want a long for him, rightly so, but I don't think the Sox want to give up Ellsbury and Bucholz for him, plus whoever else.

Yeah, the Twins are in a pretty good place. Worst case they get to keep him for another year, so they can be pretty stingy.

Knowing how it works with the Yanks, they would sign him to a huge long-term deal, he would get hurt in training camp, and never make a start for them.

Rumor has it Hank Steinbrenner pretty much gift wrapped Johan and shipped him over to beantown. I agree the Twins were being extremely demanding on us but come on, he's a proven 2 time cy young award winning ace.
It's basically costing the Red Sox a pittance to pick him up. Lester, Crisp, Lowrie, and Masterson is what people are saying..

If Johan does end up in beantown do you guys think we'll make a move for Dan Haren at a much cheaper cost?

It won't be a much cheaper cost. Billy Beane has said, in interviews, that he feels Johan Santana and Dan Haren, as pitchers, are equal in value, even if Dan Haren's annual salary through 2010 barely ekes over $10 mil. Beane will not settle for less than the exact package we offered for Santana.

I wonder if we'll actually wind up with Santana in Boston. That would be a SICK starting 5.

It certainly would. I can't figure out how they're gonna pay for it. As for the Twins I don't know how they figure Fester and Dingleberry are better than Melky and Hughes but that's their problem.
