Man, you are very fond of verbiage, something that I've grown tired of lately to tell the truth. Fully discussing the 'ideas' is a waste of time IMO, yes. If you had the facts and knowledge about fundamental xtianity and its impact on the human psyche, there would be no argument, whatever the unique circumstances may be (which he explained enough of in his first post for me to formulate an opinion on).

The opinion that I gave definitely did pertain to his experience else he would not have agreed with me on what I said. Despite your lengthy probing into the topic, he still has come to the same conclusion. Funny that, huh?

As I have said before, in the context of a relationship, there is an intial honeymoon phase where you feel as if you are at 'one' with the other person. This is a delusion, and causes you not to take into account the other person conditioning, however much you feel you have 'transcended' it through your feelings on oneness.

This is what I refer to as the 'rose tinted glasses' effect. Once the glasses have fallen, which inevitably happen with time. The obstructions that were present at the beginning will be there, however much one imagines to to have been 'transcended', through the blindness of falling in love.

In the past I have made this mistake with women (who are fundamentalist xtians), and had it confirmed by many many others that they have also done the same, thus I come from personal experience in this respect.

Although the 'love' remains (bear in mind that i have not given a definition of this kind of love yet), the act of falling into the delusion of oneness means that issues that are always existent are not dealt with sufficiently, and in the case of fundamentalist xtianity, the brainwashing involved makes it almost impossible to work through, especially if he/she has been brought up to believe in that (which is the assumption I have made in this case)

I'm glad that you can see that there are two dimensions and I hope that you will maintain this view and respect that in regard to your own situation, in order to have a fruitful and healthy relationship.

This is a logical fallacy.

I'm well-aware of the fact that you formulated an opinion. I've been calling into question the relevance of this opinion throughout. There wasn't enough information in the first post to begin to determine the nature of his situation.

Quote:
The opinion that I gave definitely did pertain to his experience else he would not have agreed with me on what I said.

The fact that he agreed with your judgement does not demonstrate that your judgement actually pertained to his situation. He said "fundamentalist Christian", you said "fundamentalist Christian", and absolutely no understanding was exchanged. Somewhere in there, there was an actual person being discussed, with absolutely no information to demonstrate that this label has any pertinence. Agreement does not equate with relevance, sorry.

Quote:
Despite your lengthy probing into the topic, he still has come to the same conclusion. Funny that, huh?

I am not concerned with his conclusion. People make their own decisions, and my posts do not lie dependent upon or are otherwise affected by his expressed conclusion. My motivation was not to bring him to any certain conclusion, nor was it to wave his conclusion around in the air in such a manner as you have decided to engage in.

Mutual sharing of love is delusion? :rofl2: Love takes into account the totality of the other person, as well as one's own self, and is an expression that culminates from the interaction of all aspects of their being, barring any obstructions that will either be transcended or bring seperation. My analogy towards electrical currents is apt - love is energy that is shared between two individuals through interaction.

Quote:
This is what I refer to as the 'rose tinted glasses' effect. Once the glasses have fallen, which inevitably happen with time.

You mean, once one places expectations and demands as to the nature of reality, one will inflict upon oneself seperation? Of course, but I don't see what this has to do with love. :smirk:

Quote:

No, you're absolutely right - people do not change. People have no ability to consciously work with others to initiate change within themselves and their relationships. Love is a fleeting phenomenon that inevitably disappears and leaves seperate individuals, whose only hope is to move along and find another person and then another and then another. Transcendence is ilusion, to think that one's awareness could dissolve mental obstructions that obscure one's perceptions and one's experience of love is delusion. :what:

Quote:
In the past I have made this mistake with women, and had it confirmed by many many others that they have also done the same, thus I come from personal experience in this respect.

Most people don't know how to love. Icelander expressed such sentiment in his recent post on love. Most people do not know how to think critically, most people do not understand their awareness or their own mind. This is why people make these mistakes, this is why the world is at it is. This is what we choose. You chose your own path, my friend. A relationship and the experience therein isn't an objective phenomenon that we are led through like a preconceived maze, it is a conscious decision that we make together. It is unparalleled and it is unprecedented.

Quote:

It is a pretty brazen assumption, that this woman has no hope for ever having a loving, lasting relationship with this man, because he used a generalized, empty label to refer to her.

I'm not sure what "delusion of oneness" you are referring to, but it obviously isn't what I am personally referring to, as it is explicitly implied within the perspective I am proposing that any obstructions that arise are dealt with sufficently. Hello Sinbad, are you even reading these words? Is there anyone in there? :darkside:

These obstructions have to be sufficently dealt with, in the context of the relationship, because, there won't be a relationship if they aren't. Do you recognize that this concern that he has proposed in this thread is this specific point at which it is to be dealt with, or they are to be seperate? Do you realize that you've, essentially, told this dude "Look, my reality says that you, some guy I don't know, in a situation that I don't know or understand, has no chance of being in a continual, loving relationship with this woman"? And from which foundation are you placing this judgment?

Re: Girlfriend Problems [Re: lolwhut]
    #7206027 -

From what I see your relationship has A LOT of potential and you really seem perfect for each other and it would be a shame to lose it over preconceived ideas or anything else, which is most obviously nothing compared to what you too are sharing. You really have something there, something that many people, even if they don’t encounter the same problems that you do, don’t have. If I were you I would do anything to make things work and I feel like you have all the chances on your side.

Her being a Christian comes as a perfect explanation for why she behaves like that, and as FWG (:heartpump:) said, she is most definitely looking for the well-being and safety of her family and the kids she will have. I see nothing wrong with that.
She has a misconception about mushrooms and that's pretty explainable if we consider all the anti-drug campaign that's been happening and all the fear that's been inoculated.
TAKE NOTE that this view on "drugs" does not belong only to Christians, but to a big part of the people, regardless their religion, sex or nationality, it's a problem that our society's confronting and I deeply believe that we can have an educated society and that it's up to us to make things clear and make our own version of the story be heard.

So I don't think that you need to treat this issue like talking to a fundamentalist Christian, but as talking to a Human Being, and most of all, the woman you love and that is so close to your heart. :heartpump: THIS changes the entire method of presenting things and might hold the key to the future advancement of your relationship. :smirk: You know there are books (a few it's right, but still) that present psychedelics the way they actually are. Why now try this method? Show her what improvements psychedelics can bring from a psychological point of view, get her into reading those books and judge for herself. The advantage of showing her facts instead of trying to "defend your weakness" in huge. First of all because you start from a totally different place.
Instead of behaving like you're guilty for something (which you're obviously not), you're presenting FACTS, evidence, sustained and observed by psychologists, and which show real improvements to people's minds after they used them.

The problem with labeling someone as being a fundamentalist Christian is no better than labeling people into "drug users". See, the problem we as a society have come specifically from that labeling, not from using mushrooms or the religion one has. And when all of us will be ready to see beyond labeling, we'll be ready to make a shift in consciousness, and I am sure you agree with me upon that fact.

Now... getting to "fucking like animals"... what's wrong with that? :what:
I mean, how does it show any sign of disrespect for the woman you love? She is human too and might have the same fantasies as you do, and that's something perfectly normal. It doesn't mean that you don't love each other of that your relationship is going to fall apart because of that. To be quite honest, it might be something that will make the connection between the two of you even stronger. This is obviously a part of who you are and also, nothing that you should feel ashamed about.

That being said, I really believe that your relationship is far from being over. Instead of looking at what's happening to you right now as something "bad", you can take it as an opportunity and make your relationship grow and advance into something more powerful and amazing. It's all in what you choose to make of it and how you choose to treat it. Don't stop communicating with her, try to be understanding to her own points of view and be there to remind her of the love that you share. :heartpump:
She won't turn her back on something like that, I can assure you :smirk:

Re: Girlfriend Problems [Re: fireworks_god]

Oh man, wow, the response I could give to this post, it could seriously go on forever.

Ok, here it goes. I gave my opinion, so what is wrong with that? He does not have to take my opinion, but my experience and knowledge leads me to believe that a relationship between a fundamentalist and an atheist, in the long run, becuase of the vast differences in view, is not viable. He does not have to accept this view, and could reject it if he likes, but I offer it all; the same because I have been in similar situations.

However much this person explains the details of the situation, it is still anyones 'best guess' how to proceed, and any amount of information exchanged via a forum such as this, will never give a deep enough insight for anyone to formulate a precise enough opinion as to what to do. Given that this is the case, I offer my best guess and opinion as a 'reference' for the author of this thread, to make 'his own' validated judgment and opinion on the topic he wished to discuss. All i can do is offer my opinion and insight into this situation based upon my own knowledge and experience, nothing more.

If you don't like that, you are free to offer your own, and disagree with mine to you hearts content.

I am not afraid to give judgment or advice where I feel that I am educated enough about the subjects to offer such advice.

If you feel inadequate enough to have to probe further and further into the  personal life of the thread maker, so as to make a valid opinion, then that is your choice. I for one feel that on this subject of  fundamentalist xtians (to which I have had much experience) and knowledge of the doctrine that they take so literally, makes me educated enough to suggest that a long term relation with an atheist is not a viable thing. That is my judgment and call, to which i take full responsibility for, as I have seen many many examples of this in life.

You can think what you like.

As for love, I do not believe in the Beatles when they say 'All you need is love'. For me that is way to simple, as love, even in Sanskrit has over 20 different meanings, but the first of which is 'raga' meaning passion, which has the ability to cloud ones perceptions of a given situation. This is exactly what I refer to as 'rose tinted glasses syndrome'.

In conclusion,  as I have said before, all relationships that last, IMO, are dependent upon a consensus in world views between the two (or more) individuals. Perhaps you do not have enough life experience to see this, or perhaps not. If however you can understand what fundamentalist Christianity is, then perhaps you will have a better avenue for which to judge the situation.

I can only hope you do a little research into it, and maybe perhaps, have a little experience also.

My opinion is established only in my own experience, so it is subjective, obviously. That is all anyones experience can ever be.

Yes, it is a question of inadequacy with regard to ones experience, whether one can answer a question or give an opinion, based upon the information given and ones own experience (how much of a gap is there?).

As far as a consensus in world view, I'm talking about basic viewpoints on things, such as 'sin' and all the other various philosophical points that xtainity holds, that are in general opposition to an atheistic world view. If these basic outlooks between two persons in a relationship, are not in consensus, then  the likelihood is that a long term relationship it is not going to work out after the initial honeymoon phase. This IMO is just conventional wisdom. You of course, are free to think as you wish.

The research you should perhaps do is not into the person in question, but into the nature of the xtian world view and the implication of a literal interpretation thereof.  Also some research into relationship dynamics and religion would be a plus. I feel that perhaps you might need some actual personal experience to make this real to you, as you seem to be pretty hell bent on relying upon your own less than experienced intellectual analysis.

There is only one thing that I see may completly stop a future - is her openess. I met this girl in University and she was really religious. Long story short, I ended up talking to her about religion and life, and she changed her mind about it, particularly sex and marriage. The difference between this situation and yours is that she was beggining to open her mind to differing ideas about spirituality and relationships, already. It may be very hard to talk to her about religion, if she is closed minded about it - in short she will see your questioning of founding beliefs as attacks on her faith or not. I suggest you try, with an accepting and respectful tone, it seems and feels to me, that its worth it!

And remember the computer does not appear to respond to words of anger and frustration - just give it input, in the form of new meanings that you know to be true and its messages to you and the limits it lays out for you, will change.

Guilt is an outcome of believing you are the cause of the problems.

I did research about what a fundamentalist Christian is and what they believe in. More than that, I happen to know a few of them and I know how they behave and how they can change their minds, fundamentalists as they are. But just for the sake of the argument, here goes what a fundamentalist Christian is and what he believes in:

Quote:
Top Ten Signs You're a Fundamentalist Christian

10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.

9 - You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.

8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.

7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!

6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.

5 - You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.

4 - You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs -- though excluding those in all rival sects - will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."

3 - While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.

2 - You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.

1 - You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history - but still call yourself a Christian.

From: http://www.evilbible.com/Top_Ten_List.htm

Ok now, from all those signs, this is clearly a mental programming, and from what I know, learned and observed, for any mental programming there's a deprogramming. It can be easily solved with patience, making use of reason and awareness..
Love is the highest form of awareness and it directly influences the way we think and act. It can be the stronger catalyst for inner development and living a conscious and free life. Free from any preconceived idea, free from all the preconceived ideas, fears, negative and self-destructive emotions.
I really believe that by simply being involved in that experience (love) and making aware the person you're sharing it with of what it really means, in all it's aspects and forms of manifestations, a change can occur. Nothing is too hard when we really want to make a change, it only becomes hard when we think that there's nothing we can do about it and we let ourselves become victims of what we think that could turn into a failure.

Yes, it can be deprogrammed, but its not anyone else's job but the person who is programmed to undo that brainwashing. It is much more difficult to try and get a fundie xtian to even 'recognize' that there is a problem, than it is trying to work through dealing with that problem, as is the nature and depth of the brainwashing itself. It is much like dealing with a alcoholic in this respect, but much more difficult actually, as the brainwashing is more significant and deeply ingrained.

Well it's not anyone's job to do that if they don't want to.
What if it's their choice to make that person (in this case the person he loves) aware of what's happening and of how beautiful and amazing life can be after she frees herself from all those things that keep her bounded?
I didn't say that it's something that can be done easily, since I suggested that it take time and patience. But I'm sure it can be done. Just look at our history, at our evolution as a species. We got there by making use of that awareness. Things that seemed impossible to achieve in the past are now the easiest things to do, not to mention that we almost get the feeling that they've always been there.

Awareness is something we all have. It's not arbitrary, we're all born with it and it's just waiting for us to uncover it. :mushroom2:

I agree. The likelihood of making a major change (such as religious belief system or POV on drug use) is not good. It is even less likely when the person does not want to change.

Love is an amazing experience to share with another human being, but it is not a magic wand which transforms us into perfect partners.
