many a times ear hear spoken words connected using 'uhm' as rest to complete thought to sentence. 'om' seems to become 'uhm' if to articulate tongue.

Heh.

I think what he's trying to say is that, since it's very common for humans to say "ummm..." in between words, (while gathering thoughts) it would be a very good idea to steer one's self towards thinking of that "um" as more of an "om" or "ohm" or "aum" in an attempt to connect to the cosmic 'isness' through vibration.

This would allow one to continuously "re-ground" or re-center themselves while in the midst of conversation.

The tone of 'om' or 'aum' is said to be the sound that is created when no resistance is offered to the voice. Instead of tensing the cheeks, jaw, tongue, and lips to make certain words out of the tone, one completely relaxes all of the above and makes a simple undefined sound.

This process of relaxation parallels in the mind, because it requires a focused intent on the concept of 'om' in the mind. This can help to relieve one of mind chatter and other verbal thought-forms.

Personally, I think this is such a great idea because I have a LOT of trouble quietting my mind without employing this technique, and it can definitely mess with my ability to socialize. I sometimes find myself trying too hard to listen to someone, and therefore distracting myself with my own thoughts. However, if I just remember "om", I can quiet my internal dialogues and absorb what the person is saying.

Anyway, just my interpretation...

The universe vibrates at a frequency that I believe to be below the human ear's 'audible' range. Producing an 'om' can help to find the most physically oriented aspects of your voice. (The low end that falls below the conscious ear's range.) Or, in other words, you FEEL your voice instead of hearing it.

This reconnects one to physicality and, quite literally, 'grounds' your energy by reconnecting the "you" who decides to do this or that (or in this case, decides to relax and surrender to the sound of one's uninfluenced presence) to the physicality of our experience.

Just my speculation, of course.

You know whats kind of funny, I used to say ummm alot when I talked, and so I wasnt considered a great speaker. And now that I think of it I dont think I ever say umm anymore, and instead of a bad speaker, I am more the social outcast :lol:. I could think of sound psychological reasoning of why this happens and ascribe it to that, but I wonder which is the reflection of the other if you get what im saying.

I like to think of OM like the root note of everything. No matter how dissonent the world gets from the right mindset it can be all thought of as harmonizing as long as the omm is constant.

While I agree with the idea that the original poster should have been more articulate, I certainly don't see why you would say this isn't a spiritual or philosophical subject. :shrug:

Then again, I've learned to perceive most aspects of my life as being spiritually beneficial or meaningful... so I guess I have a pretty vague definition at this point.

If you listen to monkies they can essentially said to be OMing, they are communicating, but what they are communicating is not a crystalized event. There is no meaning to it other than to express it and resonant in it.

Therefore they can create a giant soundscape, as cicadas and other creatures do, and this connects them to a very primal thing. It is the difference between a person singing sweet notes, sustained deeply, and someone rapping with very calculated formulated lyrics.

The difference between Pirsig's (Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance) schism between classic and romantic thought.

One only sees the pieces, and thinking them all there is, builds the most ugly profane plastic monuments. The other only sees the suchness of all things, the ether holding it all together, but is so abstract and jazzy as to alarm those who live in a world of structure.

These polarities are not polar they are just viewed that way from our black and white world. Chanting, OMing, learning how to communicate more about how your voice sounds and resonates rather than what you are saying, all these things take the human back to the primitive animal mind and to the cosmic consciousness......

it is quite easy to fight when people believe words are real solid matter, rather than ghosts, but imagine if they were to just sit down and resonate certain notes with one another, learning to sing and make music. all that is irrelevant dies. The temple of ghosts, words, separations, ego, shatters, and they rebuild their relationship upon that which we all share.

average human hearing range is 20Hz - 20kHz, and 12 year old girls have been known to hear up to 23kHz. it isnt audible.
