Re: False Peyotes [Re: durban_poison]

Teotzlcoatl is right, there are markets in mexico in which many different medicinal cacti are classified as peyote, hikuri, and many other synonyms for l.williamsii.  In addition there are some cacti that grow in the same areas as peyote, such as ariocarpus and astrophytum, that have been collected and used ceremoniously by ancient tribes.  The term false peyote has also been applied to cacti that look similar to peyote in size, location, flower color, rib arrangement, etc.

The Tarahumara Indians believed Sunami (Ariocarpus fissuratus) to be more powerful than Waname (Lophophora williamsii), and used it in a similar manner, it was also used to in the brewing of an extremely intoxicating drink. The Tarahumara also believed A. fissuratus to possess the power to protect against robbers, having an army of soldiers at its command (Lumholtz 1902). Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus is used as a  painkiller especially for blows and bruises, plants are collected and pickled in alcohol.  Ariocarpus retusus in common with  A. fissuratus was believed  to havemagical properties by the Huichol, to the Indians it was known as Tsuwiri (false peyote), and was believed to be evil, those that were not pure, had committed incest, or had received inadequate training by the tribal shaman would be led to consume the plant instead of the true peyote Lophophora williamsii. The consequences of consuming tsuwiri were believed to include madness and even death unless a cure was administered by the shaman. Ariocarpus agavoides, is known in the Tula area as Magueyitio, and is occasionally consumed as a Dulce (Sweet)  by the local population, the mucilage in the roots having a sweet taste. Ariocarpus bravoanus and A. scaphirostris have also been reported to be used medicinally.

THANK YOU hooks!

I BELIEVE but am not sure that all the lophophoras have mescaline...
The "false Peyotes" most likely have either no mescaline or only trace amounts of mescaline along with other chemicals which account for their psychoactivaty.

Alot of the false peyote are slower growing then the real peyote. But peyote is used as a name by native americans of any cactus with medicinal qualaties wether it be a psychoactive cacti or just used for a tonic. Allegedly.
The non-mescaline containing cacti or with only trace amounts usually have Anhalidine, Hordenine or Tyramine as their most prominent alkaloid.
Quite alot to choose from really.

like highdro said stick with mescaline dominant plants. unless you think you can just jump into the pool if theres water or not. im personally scared to try some of mine especially the ones with tropane type effects. maybe if i tried them they wouldnt be so bad but i will let somebody else do it first. i feel they are more for ornamental use at least for me. i would consider coryphantha macromeris, mammillaria heyderi and maybe ariocarpus fissuaratus if they didnt take so damn long to grow even if grafted.

I have one that looks like a v big round lopho. I actually bought it as I thought it was a lopho. I can't remember the name of it now but I'll check & post it later. I've looked for it in Michael Smith's Sacramental and Medicinal Cacti (newer version not the one linked above) but it isn't listed, which is surprising as a lot seem to be considered false peyote just due to a resemblance to L. Williamsi.

thats what i dont get, not all cactus have alkaloids that will do anything to you, they have to have certain ones to do anything.

Or a synergy between alkaloids. By themself they're inactive but together they may have the desired effects.
Just the right ballance in some cacti that don't contain mesc.

Personally I wouldn't describe it as a false peyote but thats largely because its a vague and ill-defined term. However it does look a great deal like a big Lophophora and I was wondering if anyone knew any more about it because I would have expected to see it listed as a 'false peyote' purely based on appearance - as a lot of others are.
