Man Killed By Exploding Cell Phone

A welder died yesterday, almost three weeks after his cell phone exploded in a chest pocket, sending rib fragments into his heart.

Xiao Jinpeng, 22, was at his workplace in Gansu, China, when his Motorola handset popped at about noon on June 19. Colleagues at the Yingpan Iron Ore Dressing Plant suggest high temperatures were to blame, and an official investigation is underway. Reports seems to imply that the phone was so badly damaged that ascertaining the exact model is proving difficult.

Motorola's local reps claim the man was likely using either a fake phone or off-brand batteries. While it might seem like preliminary butt-covering, it's likely true: whenever a "Cell Phone Explodes" story comes up, it usually seems to come down to cheap, aftermarket batteries. At least six such indicents have occured in China in the last two years, according to Forbes.
