Other than as an exercise, why would you want to cultivate the grocery store mushrooms anyway? There are other species of Agaricus which are not difficult to find which are much better in taste and texture than the commercial Agaricus bisporus. Most commercial mushroom strains were selected for their shelf life. For a large commercial farm it does no good to produce the best tasting mushrooms in the world if nobody can eat them if they've already gone bad before your customers can get them home to eat.

Because you're running a culture bank is certainly a good reason. I note (from another thread) that you own a mushroom culture company. Given that most of the people out here seem more interested in what gets them high than mycology I was just curious about why that species. Good luck with your cultures.

I mentioned having read about this with Agaricus, but for the life of me I can't remember where/when I heard it. It could very well be an urban legend. I spent some time going through GGMM, and while he doesn't specifically say that cloning grocery store mushrooms will/wont work, he does emphasize the importance of working with a culture as close to its genetic origin as possible. That could be related, because the commercial cultivators have expanded a great many times before final fruiting.
If it were a simple matter of strain selection, I could see them doing it; There is quite a bit of genetic change that occurs when mycelium from a fruitbody is stimulated to revert to vegetative growth, then back to fruitbody again. I could see certain 'strains' not being able to do this very well, and those strains being chosen from the hundreds a commercial operation has at its disposal [all other things being equal].
But again, even searching the internet yielded nothing of substance on this. Not that it would be a well published thing!
I know of a couple people that have had problems working with grocery store strains. However, I don't know if their success would have been better working with wild-cloned Agaricus.

The brown variety of Agaricus bisporus cloned on the same day isn?t growing that well on the same agar medium.
