I do realize that as a possibility. My thoughts were more along the lines of why not culture a related Agaricus which tastes better? The typical Agaricus bisporus strains sold in the grocery are relatively tasteless compared to fairly common species such as Agaricus bitorquis (which is, I understand, cultured and sold in Europe).

>>Your link indicates they Crimini and Portobella may be different strains if I read it correctly. Odd. Thanks for the info though.
Kalispera
Crimini or Cremini is the same mushroom, which is a variation of AB.
CREMINI (KRAY-MEE-NEE) - Also called crimini or portabellini. A darker brown, slightly firmer variation of the everyday cultivated white mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). They have a fuller flavour than white mushrooms and are used raw or cooked in recipes. The portobello (also portabella) is the fully matured form of this mushroom.
btw, its so cool to c another greek mushroom cultivator in here... i have read of a company of yours... pm me pleaz for info on your company!

Really? You or your company first intoduced this? I first seen seen this method around 2 years ago and have been using it for sending and storing agar wedges since then. (using small ziplok bags)
>I am unsure what your second sentence means. It means "if you want to tell", it?s greek.(in latin letters though...)

Was the non-deliquescing mushrooms releasing spores or was it sterile? I guess that if you start from spores there is always a possibility to get a sterile fruit bodies that would not deliquesce in Coprinus case. I heard that sterile Pleurotus strains are being developed because of heavy spore loads in grow rooms.

ToxicMan said: Other than as an exercise, why would you want to cultivate the grocery store mushrooms anyway? There are other species of Agaricus which are not difficult to find which are much better in taste and texture than the commercial Agaricus bisporus. Most commercial mushroom strains were selected for their shelf life. For a large commercial farm it does no good to produce the best tasting mushrooms in the world if nobody can eat them if they've already gone bad before your customers can get them home to eat.
true, maybe you hybridize with wild mushrooms for an exotic twist?
