Yes, suicide is selfish, unless it's a question of sacrificing one's life for some non-personal goal. In that case it is non-selfish. This was not the case here.

Being selfish is very different from being a coward. It's not the same thing. Some suicides are cowardly, most notably suicide bombers since they are unwilling to live and face their victims after the act. But I don't think all suicides are cowardly acts. In what way exactly was Hunter Thompson's suicide a cowardly act?

To the Thread Starter: Fear and Loathings beautiful "psychedelia" is as subtle and glaring as a pyschedelic trip. Perhaps you're the type of person only to do "psychedelics for visuals?" In same vanity as watching that movie?
Just my observation being a Terry Gilliam Fanboy;-)

Did anyone notice about 2/3 the way through the movie. When Hunters out in the desert on the payphone. The thick black smoke in the background moves backwards as the camera zooms in. It moves down towards the source instead of spreading through the air. I thought where they showed the carpet in the Pink Flamingo was really trippy. Watch it tripping if haven't before. Everything in it makes so much sense. (please excuse my misspellings and incomplete sentances, I didn't come on here for grammar lessons)

The acting was spectacular--they portrayed their drug-fueled mind states incredibly...I just wish there were more visuals and I wish the psychedelic effects that were in themovie weren't so fucking corny as to kind of ruin it

'the trip' was a movie I never saw but heard about. Was it good? As for fear and loathing in las vegas, I thought the movie was really good, I just don't think there was a single 'positive' aspect to the movie. I don't know, it seemed like a bad trip movie. It was more about drug society than it was a special effects trip movie, but yeah, the bathtub scene was trippy as fuck. I don't know, they could've had one of em run naked into the desert or something seeing a bunch of shit and having a regrettable ego reflection trip. Like that scene in beavis and butthead do america where he runs into the desert and eats the peyote. Anyhow, it was one of many movies they could've made. I've always wanted to see one of the movies pink floyd made the soundtrack to besides 'the wall.' I've heard there was a trippy one or some shit.
PEACE

it is not!

AMAZING acting
followed the book EXTREMELY well
AMAZING old style feel even though it was a late 90's movie

who cares about the visuals...watching movies while tripping is boring...i think that NO movies have cool enough visuals while tripping, because i can make the best visuals in my head

i don't care you you do think you got it, because if you are only looking for visual effects from it then YOU DID NOT GET IT

I'm not talking about eye candy for tripping I'm talking about conveying the trips they were having in the movie. It's done when the carpet moves and when the lady's head expands and turns into a morray eel but it falls short after that and it's full of corny props/lighting.

ok i get it sorry

i guess i can see what you mean, but idk...i think the acting makes their tripping experiences more believable...and that old style feel it gives me is awesome...idk man im sorry i came at you with "you dont get it"...shit...haha...you can have your opinion

but do you really think the entire movie is lame because of that?

i couldn't go that far!

No, I don't think the entire movie was lame--I shouldn't have titled this thread what I did. I also agree with you guys about the old feel it has--it literally looks like it was filmed back in 1970!

I really didn't get the movie until the end. I must say I am on the mind-expansion side though. I'm honestly afraid the movie did more to scare people from psychedelics than educate or even entertain. I know one woman who after watching the move swore to never do acid ever... Many many years later that has held true. So far the best psychedelic scene I have seen expressed in a movie is The Doors Nico/Warhol party scene.

Look at my website http://governmentofdigital.info and find out the truth.

Outside one Marijuana gummy on 12-28-2025 I have been clean since September 2011, with last day of illegal drug use being 9/16/2011 for anything but one Marijuana gummy on 12/28/2025. I am clean and sober. Trippy! Thank you Black Eyed Peas for helping me get my first hit of acid at an Austin apartment complex in mid July 2005. It was a brilliant experience I have learned to do without anymore and enjoy music and life in a whole new way since.

That's actually irreleveant, though, because it was just a movie of the book, not a movie they decided to make about psychedelics.

whatever... that's all too technical. It's STILL a movie about tripping that scares people not to do it BUT, if your not willing to educate yourself and do something based on careful planning and experimenting and fact finding and etc. THEN, you probably shouldn't do it really. Psychedelics are crazy, be careful, watch propoganda movies. PEACE

Here you are going off on a rant in defense of HST

And here you are making a pointless post stubbornly bitching (like in all of your posts) about something you don't understand or want to try to understand.

Like OMAR said, there's more to tripping than visuals, and the book properly communicates those aspects of psychedelics - odd that you don't like the movie since it follows the book nearly word for word.

Can you think of a film that has a better representation of psychedelic visuals? I didn't think so. This movie was the best of its time regarding the special effects, just because Spiderman 3 has nearly real to life CGI doesn't mean a movie nearly ten years old has to.

Short of a few minor location/plot changes it was an excellent adaptation to the book.

I'd also like to add that I don't think Johnny Depp should have played Hunter Thompson (Raoul Duke).

Who cares? Hunter S. Thompson handpicked him.

"At one point John Cusack was almost cast, but then Hunter S. Thompson met Johnny Depp, and was convinced no one else could play him. Cusack had previously directed the play version of "Fear and Loathing", with his brother playing Duke.[4]"

Yeah, I know. The reason I don't think Johnny Depp should have played him is because Johnny Depp made him too sexy...no wonder Hunter Thompson handpicked him
