Fear and Loathing was lame
    #7112813 -

because the special effects sucked. That movie should have been awash with psychedelic imagrey and the most psychedelic scene was near the beginning when he's checking into the hotel and he looks down at the carpet and it's moving. That's it--that was the most psychedelic scene.

the problem is you are sopposed to be ON psychedelic's when you watch it....then you will have all the psych's you need

however this is not advised where drugs are prohibited aka world wide....theirfor get 300k and go to outerspace for a few hours

A movie doesnt have to have fake special effects visuals to be psychedelic. I think you're missing the point.

I dont watch movies while tripping.

All I know is that you expected too much.

Hunter wasnt all about psychedelics, so why should this movie be so simple and psychedelic?

In my opinion, its a great movie, and it shouldnt have been awash with psychedelic imagrey.

To call a hunter-based movie lame when it infact is not, is lame in its self.

I mean what the hell did you expect, a fucking lightshow?
Hunter was not only some dude who wrote about psychedelics, and Johnny Depp did a damn good job. Just like bill murray did.......

I dont know..... But to call it lame?
I think its funny that you thought it would be the coolest thing to do while tripping on some night, or atleast that you decided to watch this movie while tripping, any psychedelic movie....and then you complain about it.

No, I'm not missing the point. The movie was great in its other aspects but it only had a few psychedelic scenes, which is inconsistent. And most of the psychedelia was just lighting and props like how they were trying to make the scene where Hunter Thompson's looking at the war footage (before Lacerda walks in) on acid look psychedelic just by showing some projector images on the floor and the wall--that was pathetic.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas came out in 1998.

When I first saw it I thought it was really old as well.

Great film, by the way.

The movie has an old and dusty feel to it because that's how Las Vegas was when HST was writing FALLV. Johnny Depp DID do a great job, I forget how long he lived in HST basement before filming. They were good friends. He actually paid for the cannon that shot out his ashes. It's an enjoyable movie, I think you were just expecting what it isn't.

The movie was well done. The dialogue was identical to the book. Your brain is probably too slow to keep up with the dialogue, therefore you relied on the visuals. Somehow these didn't satisfy you either. Ralph Steadman, who does the artwork in HST's books played a role in the over all look of the film. For true HST fans, it was very satisfying. If it's good enough for the Dr.(that means Hunter Thompson, who was actually in the film, and on set everyday), then it's good enough for me. I'm glad you didn't like it.

I understand he has fans, and I did enjoy his writing, but I have a hard time respecting him after he was owned on national TV by the President of the Hell's Angels Berdoo Chapter. The sight of him squirming in his chair is pitiful.

Also, he committed suicide, which is a sign to me of gutless cowardice.

Junk food you weren't paying attention my friend..you missed the whole movie.

Trippin on mescaline on the beach before the Vegas trip.
The bats in the desert, picking up that hitchhiker.
The parking valet "don't worry, I'll remember your face"
Checking in...the carpet, the guy on the phone, front desk chick, the bar with lizards & blood everywhere "imposable to get any footing in this muck"
In the hotel room, HST thinks he gets hit by a stray bullet from out of the TV. Then the TV starts projecting itself on the whole room
Then their cameraman comes in talking about Kawasaki, Yamaha looking like a VC with cammo & a gun. next second hes back to normal. Gonzo says "we know what your up to"
When HST & gonzo have some mescaline then go to that crazy circus casino, they think the mescaline ain't working so they huff some either.
Gonzo can't get off the merry go round, saying things like"bi-sexual are gonna kill me"
Then gonzo tells HST to have some mythical "adrinachrome"

There is more crazy stuff in that movie, than I care to type up
It's not just about psychedelics & tripping
The movie is "full" of crazy imagery, insane dialogue, the lighting is way cool.

You were obviously expecting something else, and to say it sucked because it didn't have matrix style psychedelic FX is showing how ignorant you are....

So you're not a fan? *shrug* btw, Not everyone believes he committed suicide. I haven't decided yet. He was doing a story on the Bush Administration, that was not going over well. And as far as him getting "owned" as you so eloquently put it... Your interpretation of someones reaction to hostility on national television (while probably under the influence of heavy drugs) does not really reflect their worth as person, let alone their talent. I'm a fan of his work, not of his TV spots.

I like movies that don't try and communicate the psychedelic experience through solely visual means. After all, there is so much more to tripping.

I refer you to "The Trip" starring Peter Fonda for another great example of storytelling about tripping that doesn't fall back on visual effects to get the point across.

Listen to all you losers defending your beloved movie. The fact of the matter is that the special effects were importanat for this movie and they were just a joke. The adrenochrome scene and lizard orgy were totally unrealistic--it was just people in costumes and that's exactly what it looked like. Totally corny. Cool effects were used for certain scenes, like the carpet scene, as I pointed out, and the scene where the desk clerk's head turning into a morray eel; the brief instances of slow motion/choppy motion--but the problem is that the majority of the effects were just props/lighting and they looked totally fake and that really took away from it. You get a hint of some quality surrealistic imagery but the majority of it is just crap; and that's a real let down.

Let's use a bird as an example. You could have a nice, CGI/mechanical bird like in one of the Harry Potter films (sorry I had to use that as an example)--a realistic bird, or you could have some guy in a bird suit doing this:

If you're happy with that, good for you, but I, personally, like my movies to be a little more realistic.

And I think most of you naysaying fuggers are ridiculous for shitting on such a weird and good man.... Im certain most of the dumbasses who shit on his work know VERY little about the scope of his work.

PS:

Fuck off assholes...
and then fuck off again, because you dont know anything about this man.

This may seem like a flame, but it is also the truth.

Some of you would like to think that he was just some drug user, and movies have been made about him.....

And trust me, he was a smart mother fucker. So stop shitting on him after his death just because you know so little about him.

You will only see this guy squirm in a chair if a drug had taken its control.

SOme of you fuckers clearly know nothing about his works......

Not a damn thing.

Sorry, this shit just pisses me off slightly.

Do you really gather that the story deserved better graphics?

This movie had been around for quite some time before I actually sat down and watched it...

The movie itself can be viewed in/by multiple perspectives.

I think that part of the fun... and part of what makes the movie great... is putting yourself in their position...

They were drinking Singaplore Slings with Mezcal Sides!

That was the first step...

If you dont understand what that means... I guess the rest of the movie is "lame"

lets compare this to star wars.

episodes 4, 5, and 6 are all far better than episodes 1, 2, and 3. the newer episodes all have crazy fantastic awesome, cutting edge effects but it just feels like its all there to wow you. the old episodes are all heart because thats what they relied on, they didn't have the greatest visual stimuli..

and the moral is: the tripouts didnt need to be great to make it a great movie. they may have been a little cheesy at times but the story and acting make up for it.

I guess the overall feel of the movie could be explained by the fact it was directed by Terry Gilliam.
He was writer actor in tonnes of Montypython stuff, which was also a little cheesy / corny. yes
If anyone here remembers that stuff he also did all that weird animation that was in between skits.

Now he has also written and or directed these weird, trippy & also sometimes cheesy / corny, ( because lets face it, sometimes the shit that happens when tripping is pretty "cheesy / corny" )

The Brothers Grimm
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Monty Python & the Quest for the Holy Grail
Twelve Monkeys
The Fisher King
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Brazil

Anyone here seen these movies...

syd barret was a coward, how do you like that? Not much Im sure.

Id have no reason to call a great dead man a coward.

As nutty as they both may have been.

Syd isolated himself from most "normal things" at some point..... Was he also a coward?

What ever he did it fucked his ass up pretty nicely.

So when your sig is of syd, you just need to forgive me for calling you a total asshole.

Sorry, I just think you are damn near retarded.

I don't need to forgive you because I agree with you.

SURPRISE!!

I think he was terrified that he couldn't replicate his earlier success, and that (coupled with a general laziness that defies description and a very delicate mental sensibility to begin with) prompted him to back out of Pink Floyd and flee from the spotlight. I don't for a single minute believe that he was an "acid casualty" or even schizophrenic.

I like him because he created High Art with his work in Floyd and his later solo efforts, raw as they may be. I like him because Piper was the album that brought me to where I am today as a person, and I can listen to that album again, and again, and again.

But I will be the first person to assert that he was afraid, and his fear drove him from attempting to follow-up on his prior successes. He heard the criticisms from all of those acolytes who had previously praised his vision, and he felt the hot breath of other true talent (namely Roger Waters) breathing down his back.

He folded.

Can we be friends now?

I dont think hunter or syd were cowards. Totally different, and totally weird.

I was kidding aroung for the most part.
Fear and loathing was a fuckin good movie in my opinion. Pretty close to the book(minus the *possibly* necessary special effects and great side-stories and articulation found in the book).

I wonder if anyone here has seen Knocked Up?

I dont mean to spoil anything for anyone, but I think that movie, despite the fact that it has no special fx for the shroom scenes, depicts what the experience on shrooms is very very accurately. There was a simple communication of how one thinks, acts, sees and feels on mush. No visuals were needed to describe it.

In the same way, F&L uses some fx to help the viewer to understand the tremendous stress/strain that was on HST's psychoactive brain, and how he seems to handle every situation magnificently. It wasn't supposed to be a movie that showed you the visuals of the different drugs. It was supposed to show you how this guy was so fucked up in the head, yet survived somehow. That is the wacky humor of the movie. Its just a nutty trip, plus the dialog is some of the wiliest stuff ever.

In short, you missed the point. You expected a psychadellic visual porno, and all you got was a smart film about the power and nature of various psychs. You want a psych porno? Go watch the Brady Bunch movie, they have a great mushroom trip scene...

i love that movie (F&L), i've watched it about 20 times and every time i watch it again i pick up a new thing that i missed the time before, a movie where i can always learn something about it.

They did an awesome job of capturing that crazed, scattery "where the fuck am I" feel, and just make it with the (as the OP stated) little resources they had. i fucking loved it. i love it when he says "jesus... did i just say that or think it? can they hear me?" i fucking LOVE it. the first time i saw it I was like "FUCK YES THAT'S IT"
i loved it, i loved hell's angels (i think they should make that into a movie) and f&l las vegas was freakin sweet and I absolutely fucking love how good a job they did of turning into into a movie.
his books, but his letters bore me (I fail to see the point in publishing them) and he was a good writer, socially he was awkward (i love those interviews he has on tv where the host is just sucking his asshole and he's just liike "yeah, well, whatever I'm just a guy"

I'd hate to hit the booze with him because he'd turn into a cunt, but fuck i admire him for what he did and just fisted america with his gonzo craziness.

he was a legend in his own right, and a very unique figure for the counter culture of the US.

I'm going to rate a member of this Board for the very first time, and that lucky (or unlucky person, depending on how you look at it I suppose) is YOU.

I'm giving you 5 Mushrooms because:

(1)  You have helped me to learn a lesson (seriously - no bullshit) about myself, and patience, and my slowly improving emotional intelligence

(2)  You have balls (unlike a certain passive aggressive moderator) and I can respect that

(3)  You made an effort to come over to my side, even in the heat of an emotional flaming match, once you perceived a common basis for agreement (this is even more impressive when the subject of agreement - Syd Barrett - had nothing to do with our initial argument)

(4)  You like Syd Barrett

(5)  You obviously read my trip report and commented favorably even in the heat of battle

Tits-up to you, Yage.  This Board needs more people like you, and fewer infantile douche bags who possess a thesaurus and no backbone or intellectual fortitude.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

That is definitely the STUPIDEST thing I have seen posted on this Board yet, and that is really saying something.

I have been to Vilnius, and I like the Baltic peoples, but you have just proven that there are poorly developed specimens of human beings everywhere on this planet.

Suicide is selfish, plain and simple. If you can't comprehend that then you have a real problem, or are so driven by the vagaries of a 'death culture' that you really need some form of an adjustment.

BTW, if you think that offing one's self if a classic act of selflessness, then why don't you lead the parade to the extermination chambers?

Suicide is a very complex thing which I doubt anyone takes lightly.
Like Hunter Thompson notes in his suicide letter there is no need to get greedy. Death is as intrinsic to life as birth and should not be feared. Should I ever come to a point where I am too old and ill to continue living a decent life without burdening my loved ones then death will be welcome. I have no interest in forcing my friends and family to bear the pain of watching me suffer any sort of slow decay.
I especially dislike anyone who thinks that in such a position one should be forced to cling to life.
Death with dignity.

Fear and Loathing was an excellent movie. As many others have stated there wasn't a need for lots of special effects. The point of the film wasn't to be eye candy. Out of all movies I have ever viewed which were based upon a book I'd say FLLV takes the cake as being the best.
But as the case usually is the book is far more enjoyable than the film. Find a copy and have a read sometime, it is a rather short read but very entertaining.

Yes, suicide is selfish, unless it's a question of sacrificing one's life for some non-personal goal. In that case it is non-selfish. This was not the case here.

Being selfish is very different from being a coward. It's not the same thing. Some suicides are cowardly, most notably suicide bombers since they are unwilling to live and face their victims after the act. But I don't think all suicides are cowardly acts. In what way exactly was Hunter Thompson's suicide a cowardly act?

To the Thread Starter: Fear and Loathings beautiful "psychedelia" is as subtle and glaring as a pyschedelic trip. Perhaps you're the type of person only to do "psychedelics for visuals?" In same vanity as watching that movie?
Just my observation being a Terry Gilliam Fanboy;-)

Did anyone notice about 2/3 the way through the movie. When Hunters out in the desert on the payphone. The thick black smoke in the background moves backwards as the camera zooms in. It moves down towards the source instead of spreading through the air. I thought where they showed the carpet in the Pink Flamingo was really trippy. Watch it tripping if haven't before. Everything in it makes so much sense. (please excuse my misspellings and incomplete sentances, I didn't come on here for grammar lessons)

'the trip' was a movie I never saw but heard about. Was it good? As for fear and loathing in las vegas, I thought the movie was really good, I just don't think there was a single 'positive' aspect to the movie. I don't know, it seemed like a bad trip movie. It was more about drug society than it was a special effects trip movie, but yeah, the bathtub scene was trippy as fuck. I don't know, they could've had one of em run naked into the desert or something seeing a bunch of shit and having a regrettable ego reflection trip. Like that scene in beavis and butthead do america where he runs into the desert and eats the peyote. Anyhow, it was one of many movies they could've made. I've always wanted to see one of the movies pink floyd made the soundtrack to besides 'the wall.' I've heard there was a trippy one or some shit.
PEACE

I really didn't get the movie until the end. I must say I am on the mind-expansion side though. I'm honestly afraid the movie did more to scare people from psychedelics than educate or even entertain. I know one woman who after watching the move swore to never do acid ever... Many many years later that has held true. So far the best psychedelic scene I have seen expressed in a movie is The Doors Nico/Warhol party scene.

And here you are making a pointless post stubbornly bitching (like in all of your posts) about something you don't understand or want to try to understand.

Like OMAR said, there's more to tripping than visuals, and the book properly communicates those aspects of psychedelics - odd that you don't like the movie since it follows the book nearly word for word.

Can you think of a film that has a better representation of psychedelic visuals? I didn't think so. This movie was the best of its time regarding the special effects, just because Spiderman 3 has nearly real to life CGI doesn't mean a movie nearly ten years old has to.

Who cares? Hunter S. Thompson handpicked him.

I think depp did great. The only thing this movie is meant to educate you about is what happened in the book which is a collection of real events. Their is no real plot. If you want to see the original adaptation Its called "Where the Buffalo Roam" Starring Bill Murray as Hunter and a lot of Willie Nelson music. Not the same as what you will find in Fear and Loathing, but entertaining. Still manages to give the same feel as F&L. F&L is one of my classic favorites.
