Fear and Loathing
    #5513308 - 04/13/06 06:47 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

So I've been reading through H.S. Thompson's "The Great Shark Hunt." Anyways, he keeps using the phase "fear and loathing"....can anyone explain what he actually means by this? I can't seem to figure it out.

I'd need an example to go on. It can mean different things, based on context.

Well, I can't find any exact sentences in the book (haven't read it in a few days), but take two of the more well known ones....Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and On the Campaign Trail '79 (i think)

He said he didn't know how he came up with the title FAL:LV

For HST, these two emotions are the most visceral, and thus the most honest. Fear was the ultimate test of character; when the "fear was on" one could get a sense of a person's real primal make up, before conditioning. Loathing is a pure gut reaction; and what inspires loathing in one is a good test of a person's values and judgement.

The phrase is also a perfect dialectic. The vile politicians and squares inspire fear and loathing in hunter and his outlaw heros, but hunter and his like inspire fear in the squares and the republicans.

That's an interesting way of explaining it, and it makes sense. On the other hand, I suspect that the "Fear" that Hunter was referring to in FAL:LV would be more accurately described as the overwhelming paranoia that's associated with the effects of certain drugs.

As in: "I think i'm getting the fear."
