mulch actives

Could you guys tell me what actives grow in mulch. Im in the Northern Midwest USA and run across some mushrooms which i spore printed and had black spores. just wondering what the different kinds are so i can narrow them down.

I'd guess that what you found is a Coprinellus(Coprinus) or Psathyrella for that area during this time of year, since you say it has a black spore print. Saw lots of Psathyrellas in the woods today while I was looking for morels. If you need help with an ID, just fill out a full description and post it in here. Another group of mushrooms that are very common in mulch beds this time of year are Agrocybes which print a shade of brown.

You probably aren't going to find actives during this time of year in mulch out there. Depending on what exact state you are in, it might be worthwhile to look up some of the blue foot posts in this forum.

I just compared with your mushrooms and none of them matched. the edges of the cap were brownish/red. the gills were a dark brown color as well. any other suggestions which i can compare these too until i go back there after the next rain?

Why don't you try describing the mushrooms you found in greater detail. What you have described matches some Psathyrellas. Are you telling us that you have looked at every Psathyrella known and have definitely ruled out that genus? The other black spored genus is Panaeolus. There are some active species, but I don't think any of the actives grow in mulch. In fact, I'm not sure if any Pans grow in mulch, but it is a big genus.

Best that I can really do is guess, there are many possibilities with such a broad description. Filling out a full description would help, or posting some photos.
The names that I posted are genera, not just a mushroom... each genus is rather large with many species. You went through and compared it to all of them already?
