Fear and Loathing was lame

because the special effects sucked. That movie should have been awash with psychedelic imagrey and the most psychedelic scene was near the beginning when he's checking into the hotel and he looks down at the carpet and it's moving. That's it--that was the most psychedelic scene.

the problem is you are sopposed to be ON psychedelic's when you watch it....then you will have all the psych's you need

however this is not advised where drugs are prohibited aka world wide....theirfor get 300k and go to outerspace for a few hours

I dont watch movies while tripping.

All I know is that you expected too much.

Hunter wasnt all about psychedelics, so why should this movie be so simple and psychedelic?

In my opinion, its a great movie, and it shouldnt have been awash with psychedelic imagrey.

To call a hunter-based movie lame when it infact is not, is lame in its self.

I mean what the hell did you expect, a fucking lightshow?
Hunter was not only some dude who wrote about psychedelics, and Johnny Depp did a damn good job. Just like bill murray did.......

I dont know..... But to call it lame?
I think its funny that you thought it would be the coolest thing to do while tripping on some night, or atleast that you decided to watch this movie while tripping, any psychedelic movie....and then you complain about it.

No, I'm not missing the point. The movie was great in its other aspects but it only had a few psychedelic scenes, which is inconsistent. And most of the psychedelia was just lighting and props like how they were trying to make the scene where Hunter Thompson's looking at the war footage (before Lacerda walks in) on acid look psychedelic just by showing some projector images on the floor and the wall--that was pathetic.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas came out in 1998.

When I first saw it I thought it was really old as well.

Great film, by the way.

The movie has an old and dusty feel to it because that's how Las Vegas was when HST was writing FALLV. Johnny Depp DID do a great job, I forget how long he lived in HST basement before filming. They were good friends. He actually paid for the cannon that shot out his ashes. It's an enjoyable movie, I think you were just expecting what it isn't.

The movie was well done. The dialogue was identical to the book. Your brain is probably too slow to keep up with the dialogue, therefore you relied on the visuals. Somehow these didn't satisfy you either. Ralph Steadman, who does the artwork in HST's books played a role in the over all look of the film. For true HST fans, it was very satisfying. If it's good enough for the Dr.(that means Hunter Thompson, who was actually in the film, and on set everyday), then it's good enough for me. I'm glad you didn't like it.

Junk food you weren't paying attention my friend..you missed the whole movie.

Trippin on mescaline on the beach before the Vegas trip.
The bats in the desert, picking up that hitchhiker.
The parking valet "don't worry, I'll remember your face"
Checking in...the carpet, the guy on the phone, front desk chick, the bar with lizards & blood everywhere "imposable to get any footing in this muck"
In the hotel room, HST thinks he gets hit by a stray bullet from out of the TV. Then the TV starts projecting itself on the whole room
Then their cameraman comes in talking about Kawasaki, Yamaha looking like a VC with cammo & a gun. next second hes back to normal. Gonzo says "we know what your up to"
When HST & gonzo have some mescaline then go to that crazy circus casino, they think the mescaline ain't working so they huff some either.
Gonzo can't get off the merry go round, saying things like"bi-sexual are gonna kill me"
Then gonzo tells HST to have some mythical "adrinachrome"

There is more crazy stuff in that movie, than I care to type up
It's not just about psychedelics & tripping
The movie is "full" of crazy imagery, insane dialogue, the lighting is way cool.

You were obviously expecting something else, and to say it sucked because it didn't have matrix style psychedelic FX is showing how ignorant you are....

So you're not a fan? *shrug* btw, Not everyone believes he committed suicide. I haven't decided yet. He was doing a story on the Bush Administration, that was not going over well. And as far as him getting "owned" as you so eloquently put it... Your interpretation of someones reaction to hostility on national television (while probably under the influence of heavy drugs) does not really reflect their worth as person, let alone their talent. I'm a fan of his work, not of his TV spots.

I like movies that don't try and communicate the psychedelic experience through solely visual means. After all, there is so much more to tripping.

I refer you to "The Trip" starring Peter Fonda for another great example of storytelling about tripping that doesn't fall back on visual effects to get the point across.

Listen to all you losers defending your beloved movie. The fact of the matter is that the special effects were importanat for this movie and they were just a joke. The adrenochrome scene and lizard orgy were totally unrealistic--it was just people in costumes and that's exactly what it looked like. Totally corny. Cool effects were used for certain scenes, like the carpet scene, as I pointed out, and the scene where the desk clerk's head turning into a morray eel; the brief instances of slow motion/choppy motion--but the problem is that the majority of the effects were just props/lighting and they looked totally fake and that really took away from it. You get a hint of some quality surrealistic imagery but the majority of it is just crap; and that's a real let down.
