Re: When the December 2012 'prophecy' becomes a non-event... [Re: Middleman]

My point is that SOMETHING rather than nothing IS going to happen, IS HAPPENING.

WTF?

Something is always happening. If you're going to bet, you have to narrow it down a little, don't you think?

That bet offer is still open

The ball is in your court. What is going to happen?

No, no, he's got it right, Diploid.

Look, I'll bet you ten million dollars, with 1:1,000,000 payout in your favor, that something will happen within the next two minutes. Come on, you're going to take me up on that, right?

What's the matter? You're not... chicken, are you?

Figures. This response is about what I was expecting, just like many others in this forum I've called bullshit on before you. They all talk a big show, but when it's time to dance, they back out.

I'll say one thing for True Believers: they're consistent.

If you want someone to take your bet, you're going to have to be a bit more specific on the extraordinary event.

What will it be?

Gov't press release about the existence of aliens?
World-wide economic collapse?
Etc., etc, etc.

Re: When the December 2012 'prophecy' becomes a non-event... [Re: Redstorm]
    #7107070 -

why does he have to be more specific on the the use of "extraordinary"?

You all are saying that nothing extraordinary is going to happen by the end of 2012.

He's saying that something extraordinary IS going to happen.

It's a pretty simple bet.

You skeptics like to pick everything apart.

Maybe the question should be...

what do you exactly propose, in detail, "nothing extraordinary" is?

What I love about the nay-sayers is that IF something happens, they are always going to have an excuse and call it "rational thinking"

He's saying something extraordinary is going to happen.  You say no

For example, if some EXTRAORDINARLY geological event occured, like every volcano on earth erupted and huge tsunamis wiped out half of earth's population, you'd all chalk it up to some "normal earthly process.  It doesn't mean anything", when clearly that is a pretty extraordinarly event...a pretty significant event from the world's standpoint.

I also notice how a few of you get down right personal.  Like icelander's, "Mark my words sucka, you are just spouting childish, immature, ignorant, wishfull thinking."

The ball is in your court non-believers.  Maybe you need to define what YOU WON'T accept as "extraordinary"...and be detailed.

There should be no argument for this request.  One of the non-believers was the first to make the request for a bet anyway, so why should it be thrown on his shoulders to bring up details of events, when all he was saying was that he truly believes something extraordinary is going to happen. You didn't go into detail about what "non-extraordinary" would entail, when orginally making the bet in the first place?

Re: When the December 2012 'prophecy' becomes a non-event... [Re: Spooge]
    #7107142 -

... what? No.

It's fairly simple to look BACK at a period of time and SEARCH for an event or phenomena, and label it at "extraordinary". For instance, it looks like the sun spot cycle might be at a peak in 2012. That's extraordinary? No, that happens all the time.
What if there's a huge solar storm that knocks out power on Earth, extraordinary? No, that happened back in the 80s in Canada.

Honestly. When you're reaching for something, you can convince yourself you found it, even if it's just something completely mundane.

And there's always the possibility of claiming that the event was a "shift in global conciousness", which is immeasurable (aside from being a bunch of hogwash).

The ball is definately in the court of the believers. They claim something will happen, and we're supposed to say what it WON'T be? It won't be anything! If you expect me to give the idea half a second's thought, the footwork is yours, not mine. Something's going to happen? WHAT? What is going to happen?

why does he have to be more specific on the the use of "extraordinary"?

Because extraordinary means different things to different people.

In order for the arbiter of the bet to give a black and white, no-interpretation-required decision on who won, exactly what constitutes a win has to be specified in advance.

Otherwise, no matter what happens, I'll say it's NOT extraordinary, and no matter what happens, Middleman will say is IS extraordinary.

What you're suggesting is like betting on a football game going "really well" for your team. "Really well" is meaningless for a bet because its meaning is subject to interpretation.

Now, betting that your team will "score higher" than their opponents... THAT is specific enough for a bet.

Can you imagine going to a casino roulette table and betting that the ball will fall "somewhere around number 7"?

No, we'd say it was batshit insane and completely extraordinary, because it's never happened before.

However, the undereducated and naive can rarely tell the difference between something that is "extraordinary" on a small scale and something like this, which is truly extraordinary.

Nonbelievers in WHAT, exactly? Even McKenna only said 'something' will happen - it might be physical or nonphysical. It could be animal, vegetable or mineral; bigger or smaller than a breadbox...

With a trillion 'events' happening every day and 150,000 people dying every day - 'something' will indeed happen on December 12, 2012.

And if 'something' amazing happens on December 11 or December 13 - will that be attributed to some calculation error or longitudinal, latitudinal shift? Just how w-i-d-e is the window?

Yeah, I think the "believers" at least need to articulate what they believe before anyone can be called a "non-believer".

And when they finally outline what they claim is going to happen, we can properly refute it. Until then, what's the point?

That's iexactly what I'm saying.  You were the one proposing the bet of "nothing extraordinary"  occuring in 2012...not him.  Obviously in making such a bold statement, and a hefty bet, you must have a clear idea and definition in your head of what you personally constitute as "extraordinary"...or NOT extraordinary I guess.

Mushmonkey says:

"Honestly. When you're reaching for something, you can convince yourself you found it, even if it's just something completely mundane."

The same can be said to the opposite.  When you are reaching for any rebuttal you can, in this case, that something isn't extraordinary, even the most extraordinary event will be seen as mundane.  :smirk:

Some people really over complicate things...especially when it comes to belief.

The whole topic is being smirk as hell about nothing happening(in regard to the original post) and even if it came and smacked you all personally in the face, you'd have some excuse for it being "anything but extraordinary".

So a man came in here and said he truly believes something will happen.  A non-believer (in this case it's the word I use for someone who doesn't believe something extraordinary is going to happen in 2012) challenged his personal belief of this event with a money bet.  As pointed out, and especially in this case, both parties may have different meanings of what "extraordinary" would entail(and in this case I personally think the original challenger wouldn't think anything is extraordinary).  In making that challenge/bet, he should of entailed what, in detail, he thinks would fall under extraordinary.

That's all I'm really trying to say.

I'm personally in the middle about this.  And I could care less.  If something really significant is going to happen, it's going to happen.  If it's not, well...it's not.

Some of you seem to have almost a hatred, or a least a real dislike, for someone that thinks the opposite.  That goes for both sides.

Some of you, on both sides, act so smug and elite, but I find the skeptic side to get a little worse sometimes because of the numbers.  The skeptics start feeling part of something(just as the "believers" do with their opinions) and it causes there confidence and sometimes their arrogance to skyrocket in these threads.  Everyone ganging up, making smug remarks.  It's just not good form in my opinion.

Back to the bet though.  I think it's a ridiculous bet, talking on the side of the "believer".  If you truly believe something of that significance is going to happen...isn't it going to change the world as we know it?  From what I gather, most of you think money isn't going to matter and I doubt gold will either if that's the case.  I just see it as a lose-lose bet for the 2012 ers.

Actually, the matter originated when people started saying something to the effect of: "Something extraordinary will happen in 2012 due to this prophecy." All he's saying is, "No, it won't. Prove it. Or else bet with me."

He didn't originate this notion, so the burden of definition isn't on him.

It doesn't matter whether he orginated the motion, it matters if he orginated the bet.

Diploid says:

Quote:
Mark my works muggle suckas, something EXTRAORDINARY is going to happen, probably well before 12.21.12...

Wanna bet?

I'll give you 10:1 odds. You put up $1,000 and I'll put up $10,000. We'll have a Shroomery admin agreeable to both of us hold the money and award it to the winner in 2013.

How about it? Put your money where your mouth is, or just lay out cheap talk with no conviction like everyone else who says they believe this shit?

It's funny how nobody EVER takes me up on what should be easy money.

First of all, smugness all over that.

"Put your money where your mouth is?"  His mouth is saying something he believes to be extraordinary will happen.

Diploid is saying it won't and challenged him to a bet.

It should of started off something like

"Ok, I will bet you something extraordinary isn't going to happen in 2012.  I give you 10:1 odds"

then middleman would say,

"ok, I take that bet.  What are the terms(for your term extraordinary)?"

then diploid would probably say,

"----------"  and those are his blanks to fill in.

Sounds like the process of a bet to me.  You can't bring in the fact that the "believers" are the ones that orginally made the notion...that has no merit on the true process of a bet.

So the burden of the definition is indeed on the person challening a bet

Your not very good at a solid debate.  I haven't been ignorant once.

My debate is that the process of this whole bet is false, as is the ganging up on him because of it.

I'll show a little ignorance here though:

If you hadn't gotten personal, in an attacking nature, by that point, I don't know what would constitue personal.

But then when he called you on it, in a polite matter, you tried to defend yourself

Quote:
