Cyans in the Spring???
    #7067257 -

Has anyone ever found Cyanescens in the spring?

I'm on the other side of the country in our beautiful capital at the moment, but my hunting partner (novice - only 1 season picking under his belt) says he found a small patch about 100 feet from where we were picking in the fall.

I am soooo excited about this find since my prints from the fall turned out to be contaminated...

But I still sort of doubt his identification....

So, anyone find Cyans in the spring in the Pacific N.W.?????

Here's his picture from his phone:

Yeah, I'm waiting to hear on the spore print and whether there is any bruising...

But have you ever found them in the spring?

Thanks for replying!

Yeah, those aren't cyans. I guess it's possible that they could be found in the spring, in the right habitat. I've found P. subaeruginosa in the spring which is more or less the same. But it is rare and requires the perfect sequence of climactic events.

THOSE ARE A SPECIES OF PSATHYRELLA, Cyans do not apper until mid September to mid October in the PNW.

Howcer, a similar shroom known as P. cyanofibrilosa does appear in spring and summer months depending onthe weather. Right now one can find some Blue Ringers (P. stuntzii and P. fimeraria) and also Some Baeocstis.

Over the past w 2o years, even libs and P. strictipes have been found.

Also a good rainfall in a hot June-July will bring some blue ringers and baeos up.

There is at least one species of Psilocybe that fruits in the spring in the PNW and is active but has no scientific name yet.

He may have found one of those, but the stems are thin and caps look really fragile like a Psathyrella. Check for bruising.

Thanks all, especially MJ...

I was secretly hoping they weren't cyans since I have been picking for 5 years and have NEVER found them in the spring...My friend didn't send me any more news last night, so I suspect no news means he was wrong on his identification...

I am not familiar with where to find blue ringers or baeos, must not grow on my regular dog walking trails...

FWIW, I collected some Cyanescens last year about this time at a large botannical garden somewhere on the east side.
Not many, but they were there hiding in the rhodies.

What Psilocybe which has no name fruits in the spring?

I do have papers of a new species of Psilocybe form the PNW. Where did you get your nfo form regarding this matter?

Here is one from other parts of Washington instead of the West coast, from the mid washington region to the eastern Washington region.

This one grows in meadow areas along side forests at elevations of over 1600 meters, slightly resembles a liberty cap and P. silvatica, growing only a few images or more in height.

Known so far only from where it was originally collected.

the one from the bay area which has not yet been described
at least i would assume that is the one.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

The mulch gardens of San Francisco seem to be a breeding ground for wood decaying psilocybes: cyanescens, cyanofibrillosa, cyanofricosos, azurescens... I have seen pictures of these different species growing together in the same mulched median of a highway. When two very large colonies of closely related Psilocybes bump into each other, it seems likely they might fuse and produce mushrooms with characteristics of both mother colonies.

Or it could also happen by spores. Imagine a colony of Psilocybe cyanescens living across a driveway from colony of P. cyanofibrillosa. When fresh wood mulch is put down nearby, it gets dusted with an equal mix of spores from booth species. As the spores germinate P. cyanescens cells find themselves surrounded by P. cyanofibrillosa cells, and vice versa. They can either fight or they can try to get along. I think sometimes they get along.

between the widespread redistribution of lignicolous materials such as woodchips and mulch, the proliferation of mushroom hunters with a little cultural bent [the various colleges are breeding grounds for these] and the tendency of these people visit habitat after habitat, i'm not supprised our psilocybes have become so densely distributed. this is a city full of parks and landscaping with relatively long and mild [little frost] wet seasons. our hundreds of mushroom hunters are concentrated into an area of what, 7 square miles [for the city proper].

You also have outlaw cultivators introducing foreign genetics into the mix. Spores from a single outdoor patch could blow all over the city.

A year ago we had a very rainy wet season. Cyans and cyano-fibs fruited in the Bay Area Oct. through April. This year they started in Oct. then stopped fruiting at the beginning of January since it was very dry and cold. At the beginning of April we had some rain and both species popped up nearby.

Wow, all very interesting

I wish i was back home in PNW to have more details! ARRRGH, this job sucks sometimes!

Anyway, I think I owe an apology to my friend, I guess it is possible that he may have found something...but I will have to see it for my own eyes...

Thank you all for your recounts of experiences, especially slackophage for his concrete evidence of cyans in spring!

No problem, thank the botannical garden caretakers for the fine habitat.
I didn't believe my eyes until they bruised.

But your friend's mushrooms still don't look like Cyans.

So true,

Mr. 99.9999999% sure has just changed his mind...they didn't bruise...a good lesson in identification, I hope he does the full identification process for his own good. It is very important, especially with off-season finds. Altough I do agree that mushies don't follow a set callendar...given the right conditions, anthing is possible.

Hopefuly my apprentice will learn from this. He needs more time before proclaiming 99.9999% assurance prior to field identification and spore printing...

And I am still on the other side of the country! What is it they say??? bad girls go to Montreal???
