(Idiot proof spore syringe)
Cut two 1/4 inch strips of plastic off the end of a spawnbag make them about 3 inches long.

Throw them into a container of your favorite sterilizer peroxide bleach/water alcohol whatever, let soak.

Clean a section of bench or a plate with same.

Pull out the strips with sterile tweezers and let them dry on the plate under a clean sterile glass.

Put your cap on the plate and put the strips under it like so.

don't let the strips touch the stem.

let the spores fall till they are nice and thick.

Pick up the strips with STERILE tweezers and drop them into sterile water and shake....suck up and let it sit in the syringe for 12 hours and use as normal.

for a really dark syringe pull the plunger out of the syringe and put the strips inside it, put plunger back in and draw in water.

Once in a while the plastic may block the needle when you're injecting but if you stick a sterilized pipe screen in that is a snug fit into the syringe beforehand it will keep the plastic strip from blocking the needle.you could also just draw back a bit and tap it then inject again....your call.

I haven't tried sterilizing a needle with a screen in it in the pressure cooker so do so at your own risk..it may melt into the syringe body and ruin it,I'm not sure.

This also works with those little 1cc and 2 cc syringes you can get at the pharmacy but you have to make the strips smaller.

It's also a good method for getting morel spores or any other fruitbody without a stem that you have to hang just tape it to the top of the glass or lay it over two pencils that have the strips between them.

Lather,rinse repeat.

(fast air changes with tiny air pump)
Got a small pump but need lots of air exchanges to make everything work?
Do your mushrooms develop strange because you have too much CO2?
Blow up a balloon or two and throw them into your incubator or grow chamber.Tape them to the lid if you have mushrooms growing on the bottom.
The volume of the balloons displaces the air in the chamber and in effect makes it smaller and increases the number of air changes per hour that you can do with a small air pump.

Blocks of Styrofoam Condoms(sterile and cheap!) or empty jars with the lids on tight would work as well.

(calibrate your hydrometer)
To measure humidity
You could take two temperature readings....one with a wet(use room temperature water) piece of cotton tied to the bulb and one with a dry thermometer.
as described here.
http://www.warren-wilson.edu/~physics/PhysSci/humidity_Pressure/RelHumidity.htm
and compare the results on the table here.
http://www.warren-wilson.edu/%7Ephysics/PhysSci/humidity_Pressure/Rel_Humidity_Table.htm
When taking the temp in a fruiting chamber use a little battery powered fan to blow on the wet bulb's sock...and the water you use for the sock must be the temp that the grow chamber/incubator is.Put a small jar of water in it beforehand and let it's temperature get to that of the chamber's.You can use the same thermometer for both readings or use two thermometers at the same time.
But make sure they are both accurate or it'll screw up the reading.

(Cooking measures for PDA agar)
I have access to a scale but got sick of borrowing it to measure this.
1 Liter water
300 G potatoes
17-20 G Agar
2 G Brewers Yeast
10 G Dextrose
Here are cooking measures that make the same measurements.
Put 3 cups of water in a 4 cup measuring cup.
Cut up one large red potato(unpeeled)and push the chunks into the water till it reads 4 cups.
pour it in a pot.
Add 1 more cup of water so your 1 cup of potatoes are being boiled in 4 Cups of water.
Boil for an hour and drain.
Keep the water,eat the potatoes.
Add water to bring up the level to 4 and 3/4 Cups.
The following are LEVEL measures...
Drag the back of a knife over a heaped measuring spoon to make it flat.
2 Tablespoons + 1 Teaspoon of Agar
3/4 Teaspoon (1/2+1/4)Brewers Yeast
1 Tablespoon +1 Teaspoon of Dextrose
mix the dry.
Heat the potato water in the microwave or on the stove till hot again.
Mix the dry ingredients together then add the dry to the water while stirring.
Pour it sterilize it and use it.

(Cheap Dehydrator from the good eats show)
SCENE 12
The Kitchen
Most of the instructions that you see for drying herbs at home require that you spread out all your greenery on window screens or hang them up from racks made out of coat hangers, and, you like, leave them for a month in an empty room. So you need a lot of space, you need a lot of time, and you still end up with herbs covered in dust and little bitty dead bugs. Luckily, that is not going to happen to us. [Camera tilts slightly to look at air filters covering table with herbs laid out on them] They're air filters. You know, furnace filters, from the hardware store.
[Camera pans slightly to look at all the filters]
You see the logic, don't you? Wait, wait. [stacks herb-covered filters] And then ... [places one more empty filter on top] One more on top. See what I'm getting at? No. Okay.
We have here what would appear to be a plain, ordinary, innocent box fan. But it's more. Much more. [straps stacked filters to front of fan with bungee cords with hooks, sets the fan up in normal position and turns it on] Let this run, blowing nice, herbal air into the room of your choice for 12 hours. Then flip the pack around the other way, strap it back on, and go for another 12. In 24 hours total, this is what you'll have ...
... [shows dried herbs on the filters] perfectly dried herbs. So crisp that [snaps a leaf] they're like potato chips. Now as far as harvesting goes, just take these in your hand, over a flexible mat or a piece of paper, and rub. And just pick out the stems as you go. There. And as for storage, just go with a sealable tin. You want to keep these away from light. There. And repeat. You can either mix them up or keep them in separate tins. What to do with this? Well, a lot of things. But consider these options.
(taken from here)...see link for pictures of the thing.

(evil funny joke)
The Wife and I were going to a movie last summer. It was a wonderful warm summer evening and most people were wearing shorts and T-shirts.
This young guy was chatting up his date while sitting on the steps
He looked a little nervous but was making a good effort,She was falling for it,smiling and batting her lashes at him.
As We were walking up the steps into the theater with the crowd I pointed right at the leg of his shorts and said very loud
"I CAN SEE YOUR COCK!!!!".
Every head in the crowd swung towards him as he snapped his legs shut and he jammed his hands down over his crotch!
We managed to keep straight faces until we got into the movie house but we were giggling all night from that one.
I don't know why I did it,I couldn't really see anything
But the looks on their faces were priceless...I wish I had a video of it!
What's the meanest thing you've ever done to a stranger?
Or a loved one.
Do you think Karma will bite me in the ass for that one?

Mean jokes...they're highly addictive!

Thanx Peter, great pics., great finds.
I LOVE mushrooms, and the ones you got there sure make my mouth water
And, on second thought, maybe it's not so bad if your whole lawn gets colonized

I don't know...I have a big lawn and those Shaggys just don't keep!
We just got a LOT of snow too...there will be no shortage of moisture if they all take!
I also have 8 years of grass clippings or more in my lawn,(I never bag clippings)so there is a LOT of food there for them!
My lawn may end up looking like the egg nursery in aliens!!!

Shameless Bump to share the info!
One more thing...pour your agar after it is below 50 degrees and you won't get condensation in the plates.

Hello again everyone!
it's been a while but I'm back and have some free time to devote to my hobby.
Everything is changed in my life except my love of mushrooms.
New place to live, different part of the country, different job, different computer, better microscope and I don't have a lab anymore (CRAP!)
I'm going to set up again and do it on a smaller scale. I don't have a whole room to devote to a lab this time....I'm thinking closet or glove box only....possibly a flow hood
I'm going to break growing down to the bare basics from spore to dish to fruit in one container with minimum expense
As before my unusual mind is available for any problem.
I attached this to an old post of mine as part of my re-introduction to the community

Peter
