I think you may have found the one thing Fungi Perfecti dont want you to know! Good idea....you can also use coffee filters (doubled up) and they work good to.

Actually, I thought of coffee filters a long-ass time ago, and I've noticed they are still prone to contamination at a much higher rate than more sealed jars. I have completely ditched that route. Coffee filters aren't even close to the 'fine tooth comb' filtering action of anything HEPA. Most of these vac bags filter 99.999%+ of particles down to 3 (maybe just 5?) microns.

Actually, I haven't played with the filter bags just yet so I don't know. Previously when I used coffee filters I just kept them doubled or tripled up with the band to hold them down.
Probably what I'll do with these is drill a large-diameter hole in some lids and use this as the innoc point and cover it with the filter.

As far as using these for forced-air filtration, I guess it should work okay. I still think I'll go ahead and spend the $25 for the bionaire replacement filter at Sear's which also has activated carbon and measures about 1'x1'.

Damn, I just made a post in another thread that would have actually been more appropriate here. Check out the thread entitled "Sclerotia Formation." These types of filters are far better, in my opinion, than filter discs, and a whole lot cheaper. If you have any questions you can send me a mail and I'll be happy to explain further.

I just had another idea that is a logical extension of what I said before: use these with Reynold's oven bags (withstand up to 400F) for a replacement for FP spawn bags.

You can give oven bags a try, but I have had nothing but trouble with them, and several people I have talked to have about had the same amount of luck.

I use filter disks w/ a plastic lid w/ a 5/16" hole drilled or melted through the lid. If you use just a band and filter disk there is way more evaporation and your jars can dry out. Oven bags work well for fruiting pasturized spawn, but not worth a shit for anything that needs to go in a pressure cooker.
