Filter Discs vs. Coffee Filter

I am going to try using whole grain as a substrate this time around and was wondering if I have to use a filter disc or can I just use a coffee filter. What is the difference in them. Thanks.

coffee filters are more pourus then filter discs. If you plan on using coffee filters then use like 3 in place of one filter disc.

You can also try polyfill. I've used it with good success so far. Polyfill for simple minds -Bruiser

You can also get synthetic filter discs used in buchner funnels for chemistry. They're not that hard to buy if you look around....both my local university and a science supply store in my city sell them.

I know this isnt what you asked....but since I cant find silica gel packs to keep dried shrooms good...I put damp-rid in coffee filters and tape them ...that keeps moisture away from the shrooms....

Filter Discs filter down to 0.3microns...coffee filter can't compare. A cheap alternative is polyfill.

i use three dry coffee filters over my jars after they are pressure cooked and inoculated. i put tape on the jars while im pressure cooking them, i let it cool, take off the tape and inoculate. then i just put the dry coffee filters over top with a rubberband. I dont have a problem with contams...i loose maybe 1-2 jars out of 12. sometimes i dont loose any.
