Filter discs and plastic lids
    #1404340 - 03/23/03 08:52 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, a giant mushroom I know is a little lonely and he is trying to make some shrooms to play with. He has already done the pf tek a few times and is now experimenting with rye. He asked this question a while ago, but never got a straight answer. He is wondering how everyone else attaches their filter discs to the plastic lids after they drill a hole in them. He is planning on drilling a 3/8 inch hole, but doesnt know anyway to keep the filter discs over the hole. Do some of you use glue? Or is there a special way to keep it firmly attached without creating holes that contams might go through? Any help would be greatly appreciated as he is tired of using a full filter disc and letting too much air exchange dry out the rye. Thanks to all who answer in advance.

My giant mushroom would like to thank Kramer for his reply, and he is going to use wbs next time around to spawn some straw, however the same problem still applies and he still ponders the use of the filter discs.

He has a question for Kramer as well, as he asks if it would be a good idea to cook the wbs before putting it in the jars (like he does with the grain) to achieve the proper moisture content or just add the water to the jars and pc? (he has heard approx 110 grams wbs to 80 grams h2o, is this correct?)

What does Kramer use to attach the filter discs to the plastic lids, or what exactly does he do? The mushrooms has read all through the faqs and has not found any answer that he desires. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Just put the filter disc on and screw the lid over top of it.

Is it completely necessary to use a full filter disc? I know they are cheap, but if you are only driling a 3/8th inch hole, why use a 4 inch filter disc? You could use one filter disc for many jars if you can attach just a 1 inch portion of the disc to the lid. My friend the mushrooms is just wondering if anyone has done this and how they did do it.

kramer likes to:
1. mix 14 cups wbs with 6 cups scalding hot tap water  then let it sit for an hour or so
2.mix in 6 cups vermiculite
3.have a bong hit or 5
4.mix a little more because the more you mix the fluffier it gets
5.do another bong rip
6.fill jars (keep them nice and fluffy)
7. kramer likes a dry verm layer on top(don't ask me why)
8. pc for 60-75min. at 15lbs
notes:
kramer says when mixing to use a container about 2-4 times bigger than you think you will need
kramer uses fine verm so your water content may vary
kramer is really stoned and often burns himself on the pressure cooker
kramer says this will make 32 1/2 pint jars if you use the dry verm layer

kramer also says 6t has a good wbs tek floating around the boards here somewhere

hope this helps your mushroom

Does kramer use a plastic disc? Or does he just use regular metal lids? What does kramer spawn with the wbs or does he just case it? My mushrooms wants to use straw, is this compatable with the wbs or is a different grain better for this. My mushroom apologizes for all the questions but the search is down and the faqs can be very vague sometimes.

kramer uses plastic and metal lids
kramer spawns poo and a straw/poo mix
kramer says the wbs is tops for spawning
kramer wants to know what strain your going to grow
kramer sometimes uses pint jars with only 1 hole in the middle of the lid.these jars take 10-14 days to show growth but when they do they are over 1/2 done(not the best tek for a newbie with no patience)

kramer likes to help out so he don't mind the questions
i don't mind typing cuz i need the practice

Why thank you kramer. Currently, there is only the B+ strain going, but soon to be more including the Cambodian and EQs. My mushroom friend (MMF) has no problem waiting for colonization as he knows the goodies he will recieve in just a little while. He has grown a few times before, but never had a chance to spawn straw as all the rye has fallen to contams. MMF knows that it is time to move to another substrate, but he is stubborn in the fact that he wants to use rye at least one time, just to prove he can. Are 1/2 pint best for wbs or would 1 pint work just as effective? MMF is using both right now but figures that 1 pint would provide more substrate but only take a few days longer. He also thanks you and kramer for the time and effort provided here in helping me.

One last question from MMF, where is a good place to get the filter discs from? MMF has ordered from micronmagick, but is weary of ordering from them again for certain reasons. Is there any places either online or in person that MMF can go and get these discs without ordering from a mushroom related website?

kramer still uses 1/2 pints cuz he bought too many for starters
pints work great.1/2 pints work great too if you don't mind all the extra work
kramer is not afraid to admit that rye berries kicked his ass
as for the filter disk, kramer never uses them. sorry

Hey man thanks for all your and jerrys help. What is the best bird seed that jerry has come across? MMF found some pennington bird seed with bird-kote (which is some sort of vegetable oil coating that adds vitamins and elements). Would this be ok or is there something else mmf should look for? MMF plans on getting some wbs jars started here soon to see what all the buzz it about. Again, thanks for the help

I guess I will just use some polyfil as there will be no ordering of filter discs for me. Does the polyfill protect against contams very well? Thanks again and I hope everything is going well for you.

Edit: http://www.penningtonseed.com/wildbird/wildbird.htm <-----that is the link for the bird-kote that they add to the seeds.

kramer only uses a dry verm layer(it works good for him)
kramer uses morning song delux wild bird food it says "contains 25% sunflower seeds" on the bag. it's like 12$ for a 20lb bag at the local super store.there are a lot cheaper seeds out there and kramer is probably paying to much, but he knows it works so it's hard to get him to try a new brand.
btw kramer read a post that said that fed-x uses some type of filter disk for there envelopes go get some (free) and check them out.that is what kramer said he is going to do when he gets around to it. hope this helps your mushroom freind.
good luck!!!
