Rusty red on my grafts and cuttings

I performed some grafts yesterday with three Lophophora Williamsii on three Myrtillocactus geometrizans. Previously I have tried and failed with Trichocereus pachanoi as a stock but I learned my lessons and gave it a try again. Today, however, I noticed some slight rusty red marks on the stock of my graft. Could this be infection? Is it just discolouration from damage? Is it just the rusty red colour I have read about that occurs when too much pressure is placed on the graft?



Also, I noticed some similar discouloration on all of my Myrtillocactus cuttings that I have not come accross before. I used yellow sulphur on the fresh cut as per usual. Any ideas?

That is a bit of infection but it looks fine.

mm, strange. I kept everything sterile with sergical wipes and worked on a clean surface. Do you reckon I should leave it then? Or would it be a better idea to regraft?

It looks ok, if it doesn´t picks you´ll be able to try again later.
I only think on your next graft it will pick easier if you graft a smaller portion of the scion, at the base the vascular vessels get harder and may have difficulty attaching the rootstock´s vessels... :wink:

Nice one thanks man. Will that infection not kill the plant/graft? Or will the plant's immune sytem just overcome it over time?

Relax man, it wont turn to mush out of nothing. :cool:
Looks like its well dried, don´t worry.
Next time maybe you could use alcohol to sterilize your blades.

Thanks. I used alcohol wipes on the blades so I wonder how they got infected. Ah well. I'm only worried because a couple of my first attempts at grafts got infected and munched away along the surface between the rootstock and the scion. Ho hum. Thank you for the advice and reassurance again man.

should be ok, but who knows. i have lost some grafts to very small infections. if i put down my blade for a minute i make sure i wipe it with alcohol again. bad things can settle on the knife pretty fast.
