People as Archetypes? (yet another personal yet philosophical diatribe about moving)
    #7051469 -

Have you ever met a person that struck you as an archetype for a part of your own psyche, and when you were around them felt that aspect drawn to the surface? I feel that way about this girl I know, who strikes me as an archetype for the petty, grasping, fearful and catty aspect of my ego. When she enters my life it seems to be always to threaten taking away something I dearly care about, which makes the part of my psyche she represents surface all the more readily. The first time, she took someone I was falling in love with, who was scared of his feelings so he retreated to a situation he had more control over (and dated her instead.) This time she's competing with me for a suite I want to move into. I have this overwhelming feeling that this suite is exactly the change I have so badly needed in my life, it just feels right. And hey, my tarot cards said I'd get it. (Before I saw it I pulled the 3 of pentacles, ace of wands and 4 of wands, and after I saw it I pulled 'the world.') So it must be meant to be right? MT, I'll take that Reiki if it's still up for grabs. The landlord makes his decision by sunday...

It's just wierd, this girl and the role she plays in my life. If only she and her kind could be banished from both the external and internal worlds, and the petty drama she contrives wouldn't exist. Alas, she'll always exist, it's a perpetual battle. I can transcend.:smirk:

Yes, there are some people who are perfect archetypes of sides from our personality.
I haven't decided yet what's up with them :what: and why they keep popping up just on several and similar occasions, but now that you mentioned it I'll have to reflect on that

Only archetypal models of our own psyche or actual archetypal personas? Like do you have your standard jock type, fashion type, geek type, etc... (as you define them)?

I think she was referring to models of our psyche in this case.

Hell yea man, I think i get the jist of what your saying, of course when you bring the word ego into it, it is a million times more complicated. I like the whole idea of each one of us representing the entire universe, being unique yet the same.

I think that on some level she's in my life to challenge me, and make me own up to that shitty little side of myself. It's there, I can't lie. There's a small part of me that's a catty little bitch that wants to put on an act and bat my eyelashes to impress people into giving me what I want. Of course I know better than to give that element any power whatsoever and prefer instead to observe when it rises and to just let go of it, calling up better parts of myself instead. It's always embarrassing, when shortly after interacting with this girl, I realize how I let her get under my skin and let that little part of me run with it for a little while.

Another wierd thing about it is that we even kind of look alike. We have the same body size/shape and similar facial features. That trips me out, it's like we are physical manifestations of some bigger psyche... I really don't wanna get all flaky on this, but it just bizarre.

Daytipper: I tend to embrace a view of the world that sees everything as a micro or macrocosm of everything else, so the individual is the microcosm of the universe and vice versa, the universe is the macrocosm of the individual, each of us holds the whole thing inside of us. Maybe it's just a fun metaphor, but it seems apt. Especially when spooky things like archetype girl show up. Maybe someone other than me would just see her as that annoying girl they don't like and not go on some big trip about it.

 Take her as a blessing.
Really, take her as a reminder of what you don't want to be. At least you can use her in this way
I came to the conclusion that there are some people that we meet, we don't want to have anything to do with them, we avoid them, resent them... but they are still there
They keep appearing in our lives on particular moments and then disappear again all of a sudden.
So are you with this chick. Don't let her get under your skin, instead of that, you try to get under hers. Or at least warn her .
I'm sure that you can find a perfect method to let her know that she reminds you of a lower version of yourself :smirk:

Hmm, sounds fairly catty to me.  Isn't the idea here that this girl represents undesirable aspects of NN's self?  Why act just like her?

If we realize that, given slightly different circumstances and/or internal representations of our experiences, we could be exactly like the person whom we despise, it gives rise to humility about our so-called "higher version" of self.

Who said that she should behave like her?
I'm sure that Nia can do that in a very direct manner, as opposed to being catty.
Why? Because she said that this girl is good at getting under her skin each time, and by letting her know what she's up to seems like a good response to me.

Telling someone that they remind you of a "lower version of yourself" is catty.  It is not constructive criticism, it is not meant to resolve the conflict, it is not geared towards increasing understanding--it is a putdown.

Recognising that someone represents the side of yourself you dislike is an excellent reason to rise above the level of interaction they pursue.  If this girl pursues interaction on a competitive, manipulative and "catty" level, then sinking to her level does nothing for you but confirm that you ARE like her.

Meow...

Additionally, some of our greatest teachers are "petty tyrants," who act out the qualities we repress, and push all our emotional buttons.  Learning to deal with such people with equanimity is excellent training for living a fulfilling, empowered life.

I am sure that NN is perfectly capable of choosing a course of action that represents the person she wants to be. Putting other people down is a waste of time and energy, and not representative of a compassionate and loving heart.

I don't think the subject of this thread is about being compassionate and loving.
Now regarding your addition to your previous post, that is exactly why I said to take her as a blessing and as a reminder of what she doesn't want to be.
Now tell me, what exactly do you find catty about letting her know that this girl reminds NN of a lower version of herself? To me it looks as a pretty direct response.

The thread is about how the qualities this girl is expressing are the ones NN doesn't like in herself, and does not want to express.  So what qualities are the antithesis of being bitchy, catty, manipulative?  Compassion and love.   As she said, "I can transcend."

If she wanted to confront this girl about her behavior, she could directly address her actions rather than claiming to be the "higher version" in this situation.  That is what I see as catty, using a put-down to make your point.

(BTW, "catty" means subtly cruel or malicious.)

I think that if I were to talk to her about it, I'd avoid the whole 'lower/higher' thing, and just tell her that I don't appreciate her behaviour, and that I think she'd be a lot happier if she let go of the act and just let herself be honest (with herself) for once. It's easier to follow the path she has than it is to face oneself and recognize the undesireable qualities we all harbour. I'm sure she doesn't see herself as manipulative but rather as skillful in navigating social relations.

I think I agree with Veritas here, in that if I were to draw attention to my perception of what she represents to me, it would just come across as a put down and not be a constructive way to help her explore her true self. She doesn't go out of her way to try and hurt me or take things from me, I just find myself negatively affected by the way she percieves herself and the world arround her, and the way she subsequently behaves. Those reasons are mostly personal and not her fault. I've gotten into catty episodes with her on numerous occasions (including to a mild degree on my part, last wednesday, when we both wanted the same house for rent), and afterwards I realize what I've done and feel pathetic.

Perhaps she'll continue to play this role in my life until I finally learn the lesson and hold onto myself, rather than letting that little, threatened and resentful corner of me take control.

Talking to her could be a great idea I think.
Maybe once and for all you'll get the chance to clear that up and then see what happens.
If she is smart enough she will be able to draw the right conclusions from your discussion.

Well I will hold on to my promise and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, and keep us up to date

I didn't get the house:( but I'm pretty sure my nemesis didn't get it either so it's not completely crushing anyways. It was between my group, and some other group of people and we lost by a slim margin. He took an extra day to mull it over it was so close. Damnit.

are there a limited number of subconscious archetypes with unlimited phenotypes? like the genus species

so, such and such would be an avatar of the mother, with a possibly ever muting specie , or even more sub sub sub classificiation, perhaps

how would you begin to organize and classify psychological archetypes?
which would you deign label yourself an avatar of?
