EPIC Classical Music, What do you suggest?

I want to find some epic classical. How do I define epic? I'm thinking in the vein of "O Fortuna" by Carl Orff and "Duel Of The Fates" by John Williams. Super intense, end-of-the-world type stuff. Any suggestions? Or even any foreboding/tense classical. There is a foreboding classical piece that is very repetitive that I don't remember the name or even how it goes, and I hope to find that any other epic pieces. Any help would be appreciated.

Tchaikovsky can get pretty epic, and you can't lose with Beethoven (get Eroica or Pathetique Sonata)

Later in his life, Tchaikovsky became more and more troubled, so get his symphonies 4, 5 or 6. The finale for 4 is one of my favorite pieces of troubled music.

If you want BIG, get Holst's Planets Suite. It has a much bigger orchestration and just seems large in size (fitting for the subject, no?)

more foreboding, you say? Dvorak (Requiem Mass), and Wagner will do you in.
Feeling a bit on the edge of sanity? Mahler's your man.

Perhaps this doesn't fall under the category of "classical" but you should look into the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Definitely Verdi's Requiem. The hardest, strongest piece of classical music I've ever heard.



What a shame, the youtube rip sounds like shit, but if you can get a hold of a good version it's totally worth it... Maybe I can upload one tomorrow, hit me up by PM.

Edvard Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King. Get it and Apocalyptica's remake of it, equally intense.

Shostakovitch Symphony #5 is nuts.

Brahms and Mozart's Requiems.

I like the suggestions so far! Although, Holst's planets were a little too "marchy" for me. Verdi's Requiem, Dies Irae....jesus christ that is scary. Definitely world-ending, I like it. Here are my personal favorite epic classical pieces:

  • 'O Fortuna' Carl Orff
  • 'Duel of The Fates' John Williams
  • 'Requiem Mass: II. Dies Irae' and 'Tuba Mirum' Verdi
  • 'Main Theme' Jack Wall (Myst III Exile Sountrack)
  • 'In The Hall of The Mountain King' Edward Grieg
  • 'Requiem' Mozart


Vivaldi's Four seasons, op 8, no 2, summer, III. presto?
Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 A Major Op. 92: II. Allegretto?
Barber's Adagio For Strings?
Bach's Toccata e fuga?
Mozart's Symphony No. 25 G Minor 1st?
