I love Tchaikovsky's symphonies, especially the 5th and 6th. So much emotion....

I also love to trip to Vivaldi's 'Summer' from the 4 Seasons. It Defines Music.

You can't go without Beethoven. He is always the most classical composer talked about, But only because he is The Most Genius Person Who Has Ever Made Music. His symphonies, Piano concertos, and in particular the Hammerklavier, Pathetique, Moonlight Sonata and Waldstein are my favorites.

A God among men...

I really enjoy the whole carnival of the animals piece. Each song flawlessly represents the animal intended, especially the aquarium (amazing).

Picking out one piece above all others is pointless, stupid, irritating, but what the hell, I'll have to go for Bach 6th cello suite. Cos it has such simplicity yet is so profound. And it is purely beautiful.

I also love to trip to Vivaldi's 'Summer' from the 4 Seasons. It Defines Music.

You should watch the video of Nigel Kennedy playing the four seasons. Talking about the slow movement of Autumn in the interview, he says it reminds him of mushrooms messing with his head. He's right too!
My mate just performed Summer, and I played in the orchestra. You're right, it does have something about that is the essence of beautiful music... that sounds pretty daft, it's pretty much impossible to put that sort of thing into words.

If you haven't, listen to some of his last piano sonatas and string quartets, in particular the very last of each. They're complete genius. Completely deaf too... it takes the piss.

Shostakovitch and Prokofiev. Prokofiev has done some stuff that has become "mainstream" ("Romeo and Juliet" --for a ballet I think, and "Peter and the Wolf"). Shostakovtch's stuff is kinda similar --dark and theatrical. I also like Brahms and Mussgorsky and Respighi. I don't REALLY have a favorite I guess. The list just goes on.

Bach - Air for the G * Great!
Beethoven's 7th * Wonderfull, so much emotion!

and ofcourse indeed...

Samuel Barber - Adagio on strings

The track i was looking for for years... And now you've given me the name. If i could, i would kiss you.
This is such a W O N D E R F U L L thing... Pure beauty...
This song would make me want to die during a trip.
Such feeling, such wonderous emotion.

Its a trip and reminds me of the fact that we will all die one day.
And lose all we love.
I love it..

Rachmaninoff's concerto # 3 and Rossini's Barber of Seville.

I also really like Soupes' Poet and Peasant when it's not played too slowly.

Well, the 4 seasons were composed in the Baroque/Early Classical, so it is nowhere near focused on emotion, that is for the later Romantic Period.  This is back when rules were being defined, and the genius that created voice leading was huge-JS Bach. Tho not the composer... I Think the 4 Seasons is theoretical perfection in music.  If the listener knew more about music theory, or even if he didn't, it is Supposed to be that ordered-there's a formula to it all. It was a necessary stage to get to later periods in Music.  Summer just puts it humbly, the finest arrangement of music theory into perfect phrases, cadences, expositions, and so forth.

But this is my opinion. Fliq, you're more than entitled to yours, but I'm just defending the beauty from my perspective

Certain pieces from certain times have certain strengths... Tchaikovsky's symphonies make my heart wrench, while John Cage's pieces make me think 'what is art?'  while Bach's pieces make me fathom the precision and wonderous order pitches can be arranged and expressed.

Tchaikovsky's stuff is great - I can't really recommend one over the other, but like Blastrid said his symphonies are great and I enjoy the Nutcracker as well

that guy is just amazing IMO.
