Are these supposed to be P. cubensis? If, then they look mostly contaminated.

Hmmm......I don't see it....... The dark stuff you see is uncolonized area. I think the cake was too dry. The other extremely puffy white one is just mycelium growing..... At least thats what I think.

All experimental, first time stuff here......thanks for the read and comments.

If all that dark area is just uncolonized substrate than you may have contamination set in soon just from birthing too early, whats the rush ??

Newbie excitement I guess.......plus I was concerned about the moisture content of the cake was too low. . . one of my grain spawn was very dry and only colonized about half-way over a month and a half. I was concerned that if I waited too long to colonize it might get infected with something (one did, with these strange little orange-like growths that looked like little palm trees- - - tossed that into a wild mulch pile miles away from my house). Since I've placed them into the fruiting chamber, the mycelium has begun to rapidly colonize the rest of the cake. It was definitely a lack-of-moisture issue.

This is my first foray into mushrooms. Frankly, I never in my wildest dreams thought things would grow! Somehow microscopic "seeds" seemed implausible. . . lol.

The next experiment will contain better environment (glove box), better prep (pre-soak grain to prevent bacterial growth) and tyvek barriers. I have ordered some Lions Main and some Beech spores. They are next. I really dig the science behind it all, plus it really is easy to do if you just follow a very precise procedure.

I am encouraged.
