Just take the mushroom off, it's only one. Touching the cake could bruise it, mushrooms wont grow in places that are bruised. Only touch the cake in the very bottom, where the mushroom is. If you can, use a knife or scissors to take the mushroom off instead of touching it.

Hi. I had a thought about this. In all the pictures i have seen of colonized cakes that are fruiting the mushrooms appear to be protruding from the bottom of the cake mostly. I have a thought on why this might be. while the cake jar is incubating and being colonized by the mycelium it is probably in most cases sitting on its base, lid up. maybe while the cake is incubating the mycelium inside is getting ready to grow in a certain direction "up" due to gravity. but then the cakes are fliped upside down and the fungus has to reroute it self in the other direction. maybe if you incubated your cakes sitting on their lids (if that is possible) you would get a robust growth around the top of the cake. one concern might be gas exchange. if a jar is sitting on its lid it might inhibit gas exchange since gas rises and their are no holes to exhaust the spent air. anyway...tell me what you think is this possibly the reason for the bottum growers?

Yes, I think that is the reason.

You can help this one of two ways. What I did was just keep my cakes flipped upside-down when they were birthed, even though they were resting on the smaller base. The mushrooms sprouted from top.

Like sean said, you can incubate the jars upside down, then when you birth them you can have the cakes sit the 'right' way and still have shrooms grow off the top. Gas should still be able to exchange even with the jars upside down.

Of course, if you're casing this really doesn't matter I guess.
