CO2 Exchange Timing?
    #1744689 - 07/24/03 03:11 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Stupid question, but so far I've either done things to soon or waited too long to ask a stupid question so I'm goona put my ass out here and see if anyone's got an answer. Better safe than sorry when your fruit is on the line. I understand the concept of CO2 exchange in incubating jars. However what I'm wondering is should I head the growth stunt off and flip them now, or should I just stop being so paranoid and leave them alone until I see a slowing or stopping of colonization? I realise that this does not allways happen but I'm incubating liter jars so I figure the mycelium is bound to produce alot of CO2. So what does anybody have to say?

I'd wait until the growth slows down. Flipping can cause dirty air to get sucked in.

I'm assuming you're using rice cakes. If colonization has stopped, then flip them upside down. It can't hurt anything. What kind of lid setup do you have on the jars? Depending on that, you may not be providing enough air exchange or you may be able to provide more as well as flip them.

If you are using rice cakes, you should use multiple wide-mouth, tapered, half-pint jars instead of that big jar. Colonization will go quicker at the cost of using more innoculum. To fix the innoculum problem, look into the various honey water and corn syrup water teks. They alone will save your spores and speed colonization no matter what grow tek your using.

Good luck!

Definetly going with honey water from a jar after some g2g transfers. I'm colonizing Finch seed, with coffeee filters under and over lid with a hole punched in center, and two more filters held on with rubberband around neck. Did someone above say grain doesn't need to be flipped?
