Re: The past and the future... [Re: kake]

Yeah you make sense
But here I am having some difficulties in understanding your point of view and I would appreciate your explanation:

Quote:
i believe in this idea because it tends to explain what separates ME from YOU. We are on different time lines. You are only reading this in the dimensions I exist in and only so far as my timeline has allowed me to write this....

By this, do you see time as existing independently from us?
I really don't know for sure it is so or not, but I'm more inclined to think that time is a mental construct... a measurement like meters or liters and so on.
Could we measure the universe in meters? Square meters? Cubic meters? Or what? I guess I'm talking about "sizes" that are very hard for our minds to grasp in mathematical terms.

Quote:
go back into the past, and at some point I was not created because of two possible outcomes.

Again
Is that "point" a point in time or a point in your thoughts?
And there just two possibilities?
What if you wrote something else then you did now? Wouldn't that be a third possible outcome? Or what if you deleted this post after you wrote it? That would be the fourth. And so on . I think that there an infinity of possible outcomes, some very different from each other some very similar... just like the points from the area of a circle. Could the outside the circle points be taken to account and considered as possible outcomes?  :nut:
Now I hope I'm making some sense

Oh okay. I guess my whole point is that I think if we rely only on what is absolute and obvious, we won't advance our ways of thinking... we need to think outside the box and consider other very BIG possibilities to try and explain the weirdness that is life in space-time.

I'm not entirely sure.  That is a big question... but I think it's entirely possible time is the illusion caused by the very separation of dimensions into a "linear" path we perceive individually and remember via our brains.  In my opinion time is branching out into more dimensions that we as individuals conceive.  If somehow I could be you AND me at the same time, this would allow us to prove/disprove my entire hypothesis.

Quote:
Again

Sorry I meant two or more.  There are not points in my thoughts necessarily.  In other words, go back far enough (perhaps seconds before I was conceived or perhaps hundreds of years, depending on how much chaos exists and how often it affects us here on Earth) and there was another dinension that branched out where I wasn't conceived.

You're making sense, and I'm glad you seem to understand a bit of the idea I'm posing

Anyone out there agree?

No, but as I'm not prepared to argue with anyone who has a new-age like theory of what time is...I won't touch what you said :smirk:

Not to mention that since this is being posted in a philosophy forum all the aspects can be taken to account, and needless to say that this view on time is psychological not that music genre that Trendal mentioned

We'll have to agree to disagree then, because to me time is a dimension and like any other dimension it exists both before and after "now". Where is the past you ask? Well, it's in the past! It happened a second, minute, hour, or year ago and that's where it is.

If you cannot see time as a dimension...then our discussion should end here, because I do.

Oh, Time IS a dimension. We all agree on that. The disagreement lies inside that place you know and love so much, Trendal... SEMANTICS.

See Tren, you are not using the word dimension the way the English language intended it to be used.

What other dimension exists, Trendal, Before and after "Now"? You said they ALL DO.

You said the past IS in the past. Trendal, I am sorry, but the past WAS in the past. Semantics... I know... but still, VERY IMPORTANT.

By definition, the PAST is not its OWN DIMENSION, it is SIMPLY A MEASUREMENT. The dimension of TIME does not exist BEFORE and AFTER itself.

To measure the AGE of things, you MEASURE the TIME something has spent IN THE PRESENT.

If Hawaii is 70 Million years old, Hawaii has spent 70 million years IN THE PRESENT.

If grandpa lived to be 72... then GRANDPA spent 72 years in the PRESENT... BEFORE he CEASED existing IN THE PRESENT.

Now, here's a complete definition of dimension, it is in agreement with other definitions I saw... it is just, more complete.

I post this, not to be condescending. Rather, I see a point that REALLY needs clarification. If we can't agree on the meaning of words, it would help a LOT, if we knew it.

There are "Dimensions". Things of faith, which people believe in, on drug boards... that have NO BASIS IN SCIENCE... parallell worlds... and such.

Then, there are ACTUAL PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS, which measure things, like width, height, length, mass, and time.

In this forum, THAT one, little word can be very confusing.

So here's the ENGLISH LANGUAGE definition. Not the COSMIC one.

http://www.answers.com/topic/dimension
di·men·sion (dĭ-mĕn'shən, dī-) pronunciation
n.

1. A measure of spatial extent, especially width, height, or length.
2. Extent or magnitude; scope. Often used in the plural: a problem of alarming dimensions.
3. Aspect; element: “He's a good newsman, and he has that extra dimension” (William S. Paley).
4. Mathematics.
1. The least number of independent coordinates required to specify uniquely the points in a space.
2. The range of such a coordinate.
5. Physics. A physical property, such as mass, length, time, or a combination thereof, regarded as a fundamental measure or as one of a set of fundamental measures of a physical quantity: Velocity has the dimensions of length divided by time.

tr.v., -sioned, -sion·ing, -sions.

1. To cut or shape to specified dimensions.
2. To mark with specified dimensions.

[Middle English dimensioun, from Latin dīmēnsiō, dīmēnsiōn-, extent, from dīmēnsus, past participle of dīmētīrī, to measure out : dī-, dis-, dis- + mētīrī, to measure.]
dimensional di·men'sion·al adj.
dimensionality di·men'sion·al'i·ty (-shə-năl'ĭ-t5;) n.
dimensionally di·men'sion·al·ly adv.

The past depends on the future as much as the future does on the past.

In order to change the future, you must be able to change the past.

ah!! your very own koan, thanks for sharing!!!

this is using the illogical argument disguised as a logical process.

because both past and future are involved in the present moment does not mean that both depend on each other. rather BOTH are dependent on the present moment for their definition, not each other. past and future are relative terms to describe our linear way of seeing the world. it doesn't mean they are objective tangeable things that are different because of their relative differences. why? The future keyboard that I will be typing on is the same keyboard that I was typing on in the past.

It is illogical to say that since there is a past keyboard that there will be a future keyboard.

I cannot change the past because it already happened, duh! it does not mean that I cannot change the future because the past already happened.

this goes along the lines of the free will argument, which also is an old koan in and of itself.

but I guess the point of these things isn't rather the answer, but the snap into a state of no thinking because of this illogical disguise.

We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Well I didn't want to get in an argument over semantics...

Oh, Time IS a dimension. We all agree on that.

Apparently not, from some of the posts in this thread...

See Tren, you are not using the word dimension the way the English language intended it to be used.

I'm not? Would you care to explain to me how I am not using it the way the English language intends it?

What other dimension exists, Trendal, Before and after "Now"? You said they ALL DO.

To be precise, the three spatial dimensions exist before and after "here", and the temporal dimension exists before and after "now".

You said the past IS in the past. Trendal, I am sorry, but the past WAS in the past. Semantics... I know... but still, VERY IMPORTANT.

Fine...it "was"

By definition, the PAST is not its OWN DIMENSION, it is SIMPLY A MEASUREMENT. The dimension of TIME does not exist BEFORE and AFTER itself.

No the past does not exist as its "own dimension"....it exists (existed) as part of the temporal dimension. The future exists (will exist) as part of the temporal dimension as well.

Saying "The dimension of TIME does not exist BEFORE and AFTER itself" doesn't really make a lot of sense..."before" and "after" are very temporal words to use there, they don't make any sense without time. Nothing can exist before itself.

To measure the AGE of things, you MEASURE the TIME something has spent IN THE PRESENT.

Now you are just playing with semantics.

So here's the ENGLISH LANGUAGE definition. Not the COSMIC one.

Where did I ever say that I wanted to have a discussion of anything but time as a dimension in the physical sense? I stated, quite clearly, several times that I was approaching time from a physical sciences approach.

I think some people need to learn how to read.

There are "Dimensions". Things of faith, which people believe in, on drug boards... that have NO BASIS IN SCIENCE... parallell worlds... and such.

Isn't this P&S.....what happened to that other forum MR&P?

I think some other people need to read in which forum they post. If you decided to make that thread in a philosophy form, which apparently you did, the subject is open to a philosophical debate. With pros and cons.
If you wanted only a psychical point of view why didn't you post in science forum?
People are are free to post their view on time and on that particular matter and there's no need to call them new agers for that.
Not to mention that your definition upon the tern new age has flaws.
Let's take a look:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_age

A small portion from that link:

Quote:
Though there are no formal or definitive boundaries for membership, those who are likely to sample many diverse teachings and practices (from both 'mainstream' and 'fringe' traditions) and to formulate their own beliefs and practices based on their experiences can be considered as New Age. Rather than following the lead of an organised religion, "New Agers" typically construct their own spiritual journey based on material taken as needed from the mystical traditions of the world's religions, also including shamanism, neopaganism and occultism.

New Age practices and beliefs may be characterized as a form of alternative spirituality or alternative religion. Even apparent exceptions, such as alternative medicine or traditional medicine practices, often have some spiritual dimension — such as a conceptual integration of mind, body, and spirit.

The term New Age is used in a Western or modern context where the Judeo-Christian tradition and/or Positivism are dominant, so the use of "alternative" in New Age thought generally implies a contrast with these dominant religious and/or scientific beliefs. Hence, many New Age ideas and practices in the West contain either explicit or implied critiques of organised mainstream Christianity—emphasis on meditation suggests that simple prayer and faith is insufficient, and beliefs such as reincarnation (which not all New Age followers accept) challenge familiar Christian doctrines, like those regarding the Afterlife.

The view most of us have presented in here has psychological origins. In fact, understanding the future in order to make a change in the present or future is one of the basic principles of psychotherapy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychotherapy

And also a small portion from that link:

Quote:
Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques to influence or pursuade the client to adapt or change in the direction the client has chosen. These can be based on clear thinking about their options; experiential relationship building; dialogue, communication and adoption of behavior change strategies. Each is designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family). Most forms of psychotherapy use only spoken conversation, though some also use various other forms of communication such as the written word, artwork, drama, narrative story, or therapeutic touch

Well that's kind of what I wanted to emphasize

I don't see anything wrong with bringing Science to Philosophy. The so-called philosophers in this forum would do well to include some factual science in their discussions. As far as the "cosmic" definition of things, it seems that just about everyone BUT Trendal is obsessed with some psychedelic self-revelation they had once on drugs about the nature of time. Now, you are ready to take on the new agers.

No need to roll your eyes at me here, Tren. I know you hate semantics... but...

If you can't say something clearly, you confuse the masses.

I don't see anything wrong wither only up to the point where the original poster clearly specified that he only wishes for a discussion which involves modern physics notions. That particular remark leads one to the thought that this thread would of been better off in a science forum :strokebeard:
