yes, air exchange will contribute to faster colonization, as well as the reight temperature and moisture level my friend.

The first time I tried I didnt tape the holes, and lost most of my jars to contamination. After I started taping holes, I have nearly a 100% survival rate, and Im still using a big stock pot for sterilization. I cant contribute all of the success to the tape, because I know my sterilization methods have improved. One thing I would worry about is anerobic bacteria if you tape - I remove mine when the jar is about 90% colonized. Also - if you use a heating pad to heat your incubator, your jars may dry out if they're not taped.
Just some pro's for taping...::)

I failed like 3 times because of not taping my holes.. unless you use a elastic band or something with your foil water will get into your jars wetting your dry vermiculite barrier.. which will then attract contams.
When I innoculate I don't bother to retape the holes.

I never tape the holes, My jars colonize fast and i have a low contamiation rate. The contamination I've experienced in the past was do to other factors( Sterilizing) or the lack of sterilizing properly. Not because the holes wheren't taped i'm sure of it.

TAPE YOUR HOLES!
i know this from experience and its not worth losing a batch of jars b/c you thought you could be superman and keep microscopic mold spores from floating in the jars. air exchange is NOT important to mycelium because high CO2 enviroments promote the vegatative stage of growth. when you birth them, you will give them a shock with the high O2 content of the air and fruiting will begin. yes its true that on average a jar with a polyfill filter or filterdisc will colonize faster, but this is mainly with pints and quarts of GRAIN substrate where the amount of air trapped inside the jar will not contain enough O2 to allow 100% colonization to take place . there is no reason for any kind of air exchange to be taking place with standard PF cakes because they have enough trapped air to supply all the mycelium that will grow in that little 1/2 pint volume. if you want faster colonization, just keep the temps in the low 80s and you will have uncontaminated colonized cakes in no time. good luck.
