its not really necessary, the vermiculite at the top should keep out contaminants (did u use verm?)

tape the holes..
just pull the tape off halfway when you inject the spores.. then restick the tape.. you do have the layer of protection on the top.. but its better to be safe and keep it covered.

Yea..u might as well tape em, it's not going to hurt anythign. My friend alwasy tapes his holes. Better to be safe then sorry.

I have just read a report "UK Shroom Growing Diary" found in the Grow/Find section/ Growing Shrooms/Misellanious Documents. This person/s stated that they taped their jars at first but found that the mycelium was very slow in colonising so he removed the tape from the holes and his cakes increased colonisation much much quicker with Zero contams.

A friend of a duck never tapes holes and their cakes have never gone bad.
As alway stated though, clendiness and propper sterilisation makes for happy shrooms.

In my opinion the vermiculite layer is there for a reason. In my experience it works exactly how it's supposed to. After your jar is approximately 30-40% colonized it's a good idea to take off the tape. It will speed growth and keep out unwanted spores. Nothing grows in plain vermiculite by the way... especially sterilized plain vermiculite.
