Vermiculite on top of cake...
    #858957 - 09/02/02 02:33 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Ok originally I put my cake in the fruiting chamber upside down...the opposite way it was colonized. Then I learned that this shouldn't be done...so I turned it around. But there is still a layer of vermiculite on the REAL top and no mycelium can be seen under it. Will the shrooms grow through this? And all my shroom pretty much were growing from the bottom. Did I ruin this cake? Also there is only about half an inch around the cake before the wall of the flowering chamber. Do I need a bigger flowering chamber?

Where did you learn that?

If you look at the original PF-Tek( www.fanaticus.com ) you will see that that?s exactly the way it?s supposed to be done.

I read it at...damn...I forgot the exact name. It was a link from the FAQ at this site. Myce...something.org. I dunno bu I think they're right cause all my shrooms were growing from the bottom which is now the top. Maybe it's because the humidity is higher there but I dunno cause none of them even gre over an inch long.

I have also read something about this but IMHO is it does not really matter. If you put the cake in the chamber upside down the first shrooms will start to grow towards the bottom of the chamber. Subsiquent pins will grow towards the top. I have birthed cakes both ways and find that i like the verm to be at the bottom.

My understanding was that you want the cake sitting the same way it was when first exposed to light.

I agree with Ripple here. It doesn't really matter which direction the cake is positioned after birth. One thing that does seem to help is the following. Scrape off the original layer of vermiculite after the cake is birthed. Place a thin layer of moist vermiculite on a piece of foil and then place the cake on it. Place an additional, thin layer of vermiculite on the top of the cake. You should find the cake pinning from both the top and bottom at the very least.

Is there a was to get verm around the sides of a cake aswell? Perhaps apply it wet them loosly wrap with a fine netting or cheese cloth. Although I guess if you went that far you might as well just case.

try laying the cake on its side. the whole thing about layers of verm on the cakes is that vermiculite is able to make moisture available to the mycelium, this is why the pins are forming there. the conditions are just slightly more optimum at that part of the cake.

the way a cake was oriented before pinset initiation or even after for that matter will only affect the shape and condition of your mushrooms, not your yield.

Also you say you have a few shrooms but you think you`ve screwed things up???
Did you have shrooms before? I`m guessing no, so now you atleast have a few more than you did before?
Nothing lost.
