Me friend Fred keeps them completely airtight unless they absolutely need it (rehydration, lack of gas exchange). If you don't keep em tight, the water within can easily evaporate, and the mycelium need it dearly.
As to tape, Fred doesn't really know what you mean. If you're talking about taping the syringe holes that you made in the top of the jars, you should probably tape them closed to prevent contamination. Fred always use black electrical tape because it isn't susceptible to rot.

ImpureThough, ok to answer your question.
Loose tight It realy dont matter. I'm assuming that you are using the pf / mmgg tec Most people like to keep the rubber seal up but it realy does not matter. If you are using the pf /mmgg tec the verm is suposed to stop contam so do not bother tapeing the holes, I think that tapeing them would cut down on gas exchange and slow the growth, and ya don't want that.
