Hey, this is my first post. I tried hard to find the answers to these questions in links and FAQ but couldnt find one. ANyways, I am growing my first batch of 12 1/2 pint mason jars going...and about 4-5 of them are doing very well (its been 8 days) and the rest not so well..some of those jars cracked when i was boiling them after making the substrate... will this effect the growth at all? also, does spraying lysol near the jars kill or stop mycelium or mushroom growth? thanks

It won't unless you spray it inside the jars. Some jars probably just got more spores or are getting more warmth. Since spores sink in the water, the first jars tend to get more spores. I shake up the syringe between each jar. If you made the cakes in the jars themselves, it's possible that some jars have more or less water. How did the jars get cracked?? Make sure you have holes poked in the lid and don't put the lids on too tight. Also put a small dishtowel or something on the bottom of the cooker so the jars don't sit on the bottom. You don't have to worry about the towel getting messed up unless you let it boil dry. Don't run cold water over them while they are hot, either. Just set them on a shelf with the foil still on them (lysol them later) or leave them in the pot to cool with the lid on. I have never had a jar crack like that. Don't innoculate until you can't feel anymore heat from the jars .Hope that helps and good luck.

in reply to: I just found a cracked jar...about 1/3 of the bottom is cracked, it is colonizing just fine and there are no contams yet. I didn't have time to let it cool down in the PC, so it probably cracked from the temperature change...oh well. a sudden decrease in atmospheric pressure will suck moisture out of your jars so dont take the lid or jiggler off the PC until it wont steam anymore when you take it off. al that steam that comes out has a lot of water content obviously and some of it does come from the jars. allowing it to cool to ambient temperature without the loss of moisture will ensure a consistent water ratio every time.

maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it!

If you boil your jars, cracked jars are a fact of life. You have to add water. Most of my cracked jars don't get contaminated. As a matter of fact i've only had 1 that did and who knows if it was the crack that introduced the contaminate? If you didn't put something on the bottom of the pot that could have cracked them. I used expanded aluminum ( aluminum mesh) to keep the jars off the bottom but a rag works too. All my cracks i suspect came from adding (hot tap) water. Which might as well be cold compared to boiling water. Wipe the cracks down with peroxide and try to keep them in as sterile evironment as you can. Or soak a paper towel with peroxide and "bandaid" the jar with it using a rubberband. I think that will help a lot.

I don't think bacteria can get through cracked glass...but if they can, lysol can too
