too long in jars?
    #1054382 - 11/15/02 12:14 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Why are my jars taking forever to colonize?  They've been kept i the dark at 86 degrees for like 4 weeks now.  At first I thought they may have been too moist, so I loosened the caps.  I might have accidentally killed them in the oven , I set if for 350 and forgot the little guys were in there (no pothead cracks please, I've heard enough lol! ) They are still alive, and grow steadily but slow.  I went ahead and started some new ones that seem to be doing very well.  In the first set of jars they seem to have slow stunted growth, most have taken at least 3/4 full, maybe more.  Should I just go ahead and start them?  What do you think I'll get out of the 12 jars?  will the mycelium produce, or did I cook them long ago?

If you put sterilized jars that have been inoculated with spores into an oven set at 350 degrees you killed them!!!

They don't do well above 106 degrees F....that is the thermo death for spores.

Sorry!

They probably never got up to 350, my girlfriend saved them. It may have gotten to 150, but the jars were only kind of warm, and like I said, have been growing steadliy for 2 weeks now. If the are still growing, will they produce shrooms?

Clear this up, u sterilized the jars BEFORE you innoculated... RIght?

I assume if the mycelium is growing, and it is mycelium then everythng is cool.
The substrate might just be packed a little to tight in the jars, i heard that could slow colonization. water content could be an issue, i dont know too much or too little.. Good Luck!

If you put colonizing jars into the oven that was a major mistake.

Have you noticed any growth since you did this?

Thermo death is at 106 degrees F.

I really doubt you will have growth or any shrooms if you did this.

good luck!
