Literacy and Far-out Beliefs
    #6973878 -

Note: for the point of this discussion, I am referencing beliefs which have not been pounded in during childhood from parents and authorities, but adopted later.

It is my observation that those people who put full stock in unsubstantiated beliefs tend to have poor spelling and grammar (in general) and less cohesive thoughts at least as far as written expression.

Now this is not meant to be a slamming. I just wonder if it has to do with brain structure and /or which hemisphere is most emphasized.

Seems that those with the most mathematical and logical minds tend to be much more skeptical of such claims than those who are more into imagination and have a poetic outlook on life. That same sort of mental precision (or imprecision as the case may be) is, not surprisingly, reflected in verbal and written expression.

What the hell is a 'poetic outlook on life'?

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Seems to me that if we mix them both poetic mind and logic mind we get more out of both plus the subtle connections between them.

It could be true, then again I would use a different test to satisfy my theory, I have a relatively atrocious spelling habits but a high IQ... It doesn't always follow that one leads to the other.

Literacy is certainly an indicator of intelligence, but I have personally seen some rather unintelligent atheists on this board(though not so much this particular forum) whose only arguments consist in calling believers stupid and/or crazy and rant about their "invisible friend."

The word 'intelligence', nor any implication pointing towards it, is not to be found in my post. Seems you have a vivid imagination and atrocious spelling and thus meet my requirements for seeing things not in evidence.

No but it certainly relates to literacy, as silversoul suggests... perhaps you missed my point altogether.

Ok, so no implication pointing to intellect whatsoever in your post... Unsubstantiated arguments in no way relate to this? I didn't really want to bring this up, but since you insist i will, it does and remains pertinant to your discussion.

If you would like me to clarify further just ask.

I disagree... to a point.

Imagination, used in tandem with logic, is what propels humanity foreword.

The smartest humans understand the PHYSICAL world, then daydream about how to manipulate it. Finally they CREATE what they daydreamed about.

This requires effective communication between BOTH the Left AND Right hemispheres of the brain.

Skepticism can hinder human growth as much as ignorance can.

Language and its usage is a very dynamic thing. How many thousands of words there must be, and so many different manners of adhering to different notions of grammar.

It really makes one realize that there isn't really any uniform standard or notion of how statements "should" be phrased. Languages themselves evolve through those who use and think through such languages interacting with others who primarily use and think in a different language, with different styles of grammar and different manners of forming words with letters.

Communication simply isn't limited to any specific avenue and the wide variety in the tens of thousands of languages acrossed this planet testifies this. Usually, if someone is actually interested in understanding what others say, they consciously apply effort to understand, and certainly are free to engage in communication to better understand what they are expressing.

That is how understanding is developed, and that is how language evolves. Communication. Some people seek communication honestly.

Society itself exists through communication, through interaction. Our development as a civilization was spearheaded by our drive to understand and to be understood by others. :craven:

this really brings out the school marm (excuse the spelling there is none other) in you.
and while you are right in everything, usually, you miss by miles when you include the poetic among the misspelled masses.

See, you are the perfect example.

There is no standard by which thought must be expressed in accordance with.

Oh, but how could we ever function as a society if we did not strictly adhere to a specific, objective standard as to how language must be utilized?

I feel that your premise may be flawed. This forum is filled to the brim with people holding unsubstantiated beliefs as fact. I am one of those people, and so are you. Most people on this forum are very well read and literate, but theres all kinds of crazy beliefs being bandied about here. We don't all share the same delusion, but we are all hopelessly delusional.
