Question on cloning generations.
    #6965206 -

So I got into this hobby about 6 months ago and went from just producing enough for me and my wife to becoming infatuated with the process and now having more mushrooms than I know what to do with (I just got back from my old room mate's graduation and I gave him a nice 3oz grad present).

The most fascinating thing thus far has been the genetic aspect. My original spore syringe was a South American strain from Ralphsters and I should be soon harvesting my first flush of a third generation clone of the original multispore "batch", if you will. My question is, I've read that mycelium gets "tired" after a while and you need to go back to the source (i.e. spores), so should I take a spore print of some of these to start a new bloodline, or does cloning refresh them so I don't have to worry? This flush should be absolutely amazing, all of the pins are about as thick as a dime and about 1.5 inches tall. If I take a spore print will my chances of retaining some of the awesome genetics I've already isolated be improved?

I'm going to continue using this isolate regardless (I have a quart jar filled with a very robust Malt/Dextrose LC of it), but I'd also like to continue playing with this strain and seeing how much I can beef them up. I've definately noticed that as I've taken new clones the genetics have improved. The first generation performed well, but had a lot of scrawny tall ones and hollow stems, the second generation didn't have many scrawny ones and had a lot more thick stemmed beasts that were fairly thick throughout and judging from the pins it looks like the third generation ones that are growing now won't have many hollow stems at all. I also keep a note book tracking every detail of performance and the origins of the "parent" shroom. It's really interesting how my first clone was from a casing, and performed about the same as a the multispore did from a cake, yet the clone I took from one of those cakes performed awesome on my next batch. It seems like some substrains are better suited for cakes versus casings, but it may have just been luck so I'm going to continue playing around with it and see what I can figure out.

I can't give you any answers, but it sounds like you're doing good! I have heard that, yes, eventually you need to stop cloning clones or whatever. It's the same way with weed. I would assume the genetics deteriorate eventually, maybe like in-breeding in humans? either way, you're doing some good research... keep it up brotha!

PM me if you'd like to trade, I'm interested in your "SUPER SA's"
