Question about cloning
    #584694 - 03/20/02 09:47 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

Ok here's something I was just thinking about. When u clone a specific mushroom w. agar, the whatever substrate u innoculate w. the agar wedge will grow only that particular exact mushroom, cuz it's DNA correct? Well if this is true, say u took a shroom that grew really quick and ended up weighing 11 grams wet and u cloned it. Then u cased 2 pints worth of substrate it, how many of that shroom could u expect? As many as in a normal flush? Cuz if so, u would have a hell of a lot of weight in a flush, around 220 grams if u got 20 of em. The whole point of my question is, when cloning, if u clone a small mushy, will u get more numbers, and if u clone big mushies, will u get less but about the same amount of weight? I was just curious....

It doesn't matter if you clone a large or a small mushroom. The size of the mushroom has to do with it's proximity to nutrients and water within the mycelial colony. People clone the largest fruit, because it usually was the first to PIN, and the first to develope. When you clone it, you can still get small fruits, because each flush of mushrooms is dependent on the quantity of nutrients the mycelial network was able to store prior to the flush, and the availability of moisture. Not all the mushrooms in a flush can be monsters, there isn't enough water and nutrients to make them so.

If you start with a multispore innoculation, you want to clone the bigest baddest mushroom of the bunch, because it did the best in your particular environment. That clone maintains the substrain. When you innoculate it into the same substrate under the same environment, you should get a more uniform flush. Size might actually decrease, not increase. You will likely be getting a more uniform size mushroom, growing wall to wall, across the surface of the casing. But again, the amount of mushrooms maturing is based on genetics, and environment. You still can get some that are large, and some that are small. But more uniformity!!!
Overall yield is a combination of all the environmental parameters plus the genetics.

Couldnt have said it better.
BTW - cloning is easier in BRF paste or malt/water
