The oil companies could invest like 1% of their revenue into improving public transit. Hah. Yeah right.

Why is it the oil companies' responsibility?

Youre right, in the scheme of things most people dont commute to work by bike. Also, most people are overweight

Maybe like, 1 guy I work with is over weight.

Well obviously we can't be responsible for ourselves... that would be ridiculous.

Its definately not their responsibility. Nor am i suggesting it should be.
I guess the mere idea of an act of good-will for the benefit of society by those with all the money is preposterous.

Sorry I forgot the sarcasm smiley :smirk:

I just meant that it seems to be the custom to blame big companies for things we choose to buy from them.

Colbadol, I respect you for the fact that you ride your bike but you seem to think that everyone could do it unless they are lazy. As I said before, it is 34.6 miles from my house to my work. This is the most direct freeway route. A suitable route on a bike would certainly add a measurable amount of distance to this commute. So lets say 40 miles on a bike. And the area is nowhere near flat. You have to traverse several small ranges and through several valleys no matter which route was chosen. So lets say that a good cyclist, in shape, could make the ride in about 2 1/2 hours. Sound right? So now we are talking a 5 hour commute each day, beginning at about 2AM (I have to get to work around 4:30 or 5 AM depending on the day) and often ending around 9 or 10 at night (a 12-14 workday is not rare). Does this sound reasonable or am I just lazy?

And FYI, I do a lot of walking around my neighborhood. Walk to stores, walk to bars, walk to beach, etc. I'm not the lazy s.o.b. who takes the car a few blocks to go get a gallon of milk. But I'd bet my next paycheck you wouldn't commute to work on your bike if you were in my position!

ya man thatd be pretty ridiculous. sorry if i came off as some sort of cycling evangelist, lol.
i had to take a step back to realize what i was saying...
youre right.
im just tired of hearing excuses for shit like 'i dont wanna be sweaty,' etc. but hey. i started it. kind of lame of me to push cycling like some jerkoff elitist.
I dont go up to random people at work and preach commuting by bike, i swear. :crazy2:

if you want to, do it. if you dont, you have your reasons.

to those of you suggesting everyon who cant ride a bike to work is lazy:

not all of us have push botton jobs where we show up and do nothing

some of us are productive, meaning, we produce a product. So we NEED to be able to haul tools, machines, supplies.

I am a landscaper, farmer, garden nursery.

So suck my dick as a blow past your ass on the free way, as i drive with a jeep full of plants, bitch!

didn't they effectively do the gas ban thing back in '97? and remember when the war started and gas prices first shot up, people didn't sit around and say it couldn't work they actually did something.
it makes me wonder why now is so different.

i dont understand what even attempting to lower gas sales for one day would do.
thankfully, most people on this message board see through gas ban bullshit.

it's not like the companies suddenly raised the gas prices. we've predicted this moment for thirty years.
hell, just last year gas went up sharply at the beginning of summer. suprise

All it means is that people will be driving around really pissed. It's their GOD GIVEN RIGHT to have cheap gas and to drive big-assed cars, and if they're being denied it, it's someone's fault but their own, and they're gonna get pissed and ragey...that and run up their credit cards.

Like many have and will continue to say, this idea is bankrupt of sense.

If you want to reduce the price of gas, either:

a) discover more petroleum reserves
 reduce demand for petroleum products (not buying it on a single day does not effect demand)
c) subsidize it with taxes

All of these ideas are not really feasible for most Americans, so really the only choice is to realize that gas is actually fucking cheap for the amount of energy it provides, and you should be thankful while it's under $7-8 a gallon (some argue it's worth much more).

There will be a time in the not-too-distant future when we can't afford gasoline and it sure isn't now.

well i guess the real answer as i see it is alternate energy sources, its already being done but not nearly enough, as I'm sure you all know. we have had the technology since the 70s to create large scale production of it. its starting to seem like the oil companies are running the country more then the government is.

would hemp seed oil be an efficient choice of fuels if we can get past all of the reefer madness bullshit?
