The hookah bars in downtown seattle are still open. I don't know if they are legally supposed to allow you to smoke, but I was at one of them (I forget the name, but it was a few blocks up from Pike Place...A big place, with a DJ and huge Egyptian paintings on the back walls) one Wednesday night. It seemed like business as usual. On the other hand, I know of atleast one Hookah bar in Olympia that was forced out of business. I dunno what the deal is

I agree with you, in fact, in my first post on this topic I mentioned the fact that I liked to step outside anyways, but... I think the bigger issue here is the fact that the government has the authority to tell a private citizen and business owner that he cannot allow smoking inside a building that he has bought and paid for, regardless of whether or not it is open to the public. Nobody is forcing non-smokers to enter this establishment. This is the only drawback I can see to this law being passed. In my opinion our government is exercising FAR TOO MUCH control over it's citizens.

Yep, the government has no right to pass this law.
I have no problem with not smoking in place I'm not allowed to, but I believe that should be left up to the owners, not some jackoff gov't.

Agreed... it makes me chuckle when everyone talks about the "freedom" we have in America. Freedom is such an illusion...
I mean compared to many many countries, yeah, we are free. But we are losing our freedoms, and quickly

Columbus has this law. Hookah places are okay, because if you make a certain percent of your profit from tobacco sales you can smoke inside. What pisses me off is bars--a restaurant is one thing, but dude..bars = smoking. A friend's dad owns a large pub and he lost two thirds of his business after the ban went into effect. He's gotten some of that business back but not anywhere near all of it.

chicago passed this as well. went into effect on monday (although bars have 2 years to comply). I think it's bullshit - overreaching of government into private business.
businesses can allow smoking in their establishments if 35% of the profit comes from tobacco sales. I predict a few bars beginning to sell packs of cigarettes & cigars in the next 2 years...but then their business would morph into tobacco/alcohol bars - definitely risky venture & would take alot of reorganizing & new marketing.
[smoking outside in the chicago winter fucking sucks btw]

Yeah, I could imagine...
and losing 2/3 of a pub's business due to smoking bans sounds a little high, but of course I don't know.
