you WIMP!!!

20 miles is perfect distance for a bike commute. The effective range for a cyclist is WAY more than 20 miles.
This is the problem. This stigma...people think that it's like some impossible feat to bike to and from work. New flash, you get better and faster at it the more you do it.
I know lots of people who bike to work 35 miles and back several times a week. It's easier than you think. Read up on it, gain some knowledge. No, you probably shouldnt ride 20 miles each way on a mountain bike with big fat knobbies, but a smooth new road bike makes it EASY.

My commute is 12 miles each way, and im making route to add MORE distance just because riding a bike is so much fun in the morning.

I don't know if it's the impossibility, but the time restraint.
My bike broke years back though, so I don't really know how long it would take to ride 20 miles.

say it takes you 40 minutes to drive to work. if you leave 30-60 minutes early, you can bike it.

my 12 mile bike commute takes me less than 30 minutes. It takes 35 to drive due to traffic.

people are shocked when i tell them that i bike to work...it's sooooo easy and fun and peaceful.

if it were necessary, you would find a way. but that's the problem. for so many people it's not 'necessary' yet. When gas is 6 bucks a gallon, we'll see.

out of necessity comes ability.

if they make electric cars, the roads will still be super congested with self-important asshats. and it's not like electric cars will be cheaper or better for the environment 100%. That electric power is still supplied by a majority of coal-burning power plants, and youre still paying per kWhr. Plus, what happens when all of these hybrid and electric cars get old and need to be replaced? How harmful are the heavy metals contained in these batteries to our environment?

...youre so dependent on other people for your livlihood. Just do it yourself man. Get a nice bike, save yourself some money, get in shape, and do the world a favor. Be independent. Be capable.

With all due respect, from reading this thread you come across as a "self-important asshat"

And I agree that not buying gas on the 15th will not work. If anything, the gas companies will just raise the price quite a bit the next day because they'll know everyone will be buying alot that day.

i know, ...saw of that.
but hey, at least im not on the roads, blocking your intersections trying to run a late yellow light with gridlock in front of me.

My take on this whole thing is just that people are waiting for someone else to fix the problem when they have all the capability themselves, yet they do not realize it. How American to think a 1 day fast would fix our habit...like so many people's philosophy on dieting.
No body is willing to change their lifestyle. That's sad.
It's like what that one guy said in the other thread about gas, When you understand that gas is a choice, your choice, you dont complain about it.

As fine and dandy as that sounds, it's not practical for everybody. I have to carry 200+ pounds of surveying equipment to work and back every day. I drive a 4-cylinder compact and use about $20 of gas a week. I don't complain about gas prices.

speaking on bike impracticality (finally figured out what word that should be):

What about if you:
-had to cross a landmark you could not bike over (bridge/tunnel)
-have to bike through a ghetto (don't say its no big deal, it is)
-have to drop kids off at daycare or school on your way in
-have to pick up dinner on the way home

Those are just a couple things I could think of off the top of my head that would prevent the average american from biking to work.  While biking may be relaxing and envigorating (i mountain bike), riding to work everyday is impractical and unnecessary (and undsirable) for most americans.

Yah, we are lazy - and that's perfectly OK

most bike commuters dont ride to work every day of the week.

they ride a few each week, like a routine or only on really nice days, and this makes a very big impact on their lives.
many bike commuters own cars, too. theyre just not 100% dependent on them.
you dont have to bike to work the exact same way you drive. there are ALWAYS alternate/better routes to take. that ghetto excuse is pretty lame, imo.

www.gmap-pedometer.com

you just have to look at a map.

apparently you've never lived in the ghetto. there are many reasons I would not want to bike through one. mainly, a large portion of the projects do not own their own cars, and ride their bikes most places (like you want!), and 80% of the population would have no problem jackin a nice commuter bike from some scrawny white boy riding through their territory

I never buy gas. So every day I send them a statement.

However a million other things in my life are reliant on petroleum. And there in lies the problem.

But hey, whatever you gotta tell yourself to celebrate your laziness is up to you. aint my life. have fun keepin it real wit yo laziness, yo. it's totally ok. Youre payin for it, and you fit right in.

edit: yea, psilo. youre totally right on that. ALL plastic products come from petroleum...who knows what else. It's very difficult to live 100% green.

haha this is the dumbest idea ever. Unless theres a no drive day, its not gonna make any difference either way. You might as well go buy 200 gallons of gas to keep in your basment then claim to have a "no drive summer"

get a clue.

if you wanna do something buy some solar panels, or have "add a windmill to your garden day" or "black party solar panel day"

you can't win with the oil companies. so invest in a different source of energy. they know they have the US by the scrotum.
