Huehuecoyotl's Rule
    #6855101 -

In my house I have cable internet and TV. I see the internet as choice driven for the most part. There is interactivity, and therefore opportunity to think about the choices you make regarding it's use. The TV on the other hand is non-interactive and serves up fewer choices in the media it delivers. It had become common in my house for the TV to stay on with no one watching it, just serving up the newest media sensations to our zombified ears. I would turn it off, but my kids invariably turn it back on and abandon it. I don't appreciate my attention being used up in such a peripheral manner.

After a discussion and agreement with my wife the following rule was made. If someone in the house wants to watch TV then they have to look up the listing for what they want before hand and then watch the show...turning it off afterwards. There is no restriction other than NO RANDOM CHANNEL SURFING or abandoning the TV while it is on. All viewing has to be made on conscious choice and not impulse. I am hoping this will make us more specific in our media consumption. The purpose is to avoid absorbing the fear driven agenda that the media services hammer into us unconsciously all of the time through the television. With my rule conscious choices have to be made or the TV is not turned on. Habits like just turning the TV on for it to be on are out the window.

The information that one is exposed to has an impact on the quality of their consciousness, much in the way that food builds the body that consumes it and the quality of food determines the quality of health. What do you guys think of my rule? I want some feedback on the consequences of following this rule for everybody in the house...even me.

No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

I have no advice for you. I put my TV in storage two years ago and haven't looked back. :yesnod:

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

My gradual elimination of TV from our lives began with a simple rule:

mute the TV when the commercials come on, and actually get up & move around for the break time.

After this, I instituted another rule:

Circle your show in the TV guide ahead of time.  When it is time for it to come on, you may turn on the TV.  When it ends, turn it off.

Then I went extreme--no cable TV during the summer months.  We spent 3 summers without cable (which essentially means NO TV reception where I live), before we decided to give up TV altogether.

You're on the right track!

I do like to have it to keep up on weather conditions for travel in the winter and information on tornado warnings. I also like to use it to play movies I download off of the internet. The machine itself will stay, but I may eventually turn off the TV part of the cable if I can, but for now the cable company doesn't charge it that way.

I once heard a lecture by Tim Leary where he pinpointed television as one of the primary means of societal programming.

I don't really need any particular rule for TV. I just don't see very many interesting shows anymore. When I do see something interesting, I watch it. Other than that, I have a couple favorite shows I watch, and spend the rest of the time doing other things like reading or posting on the Shroomery.

If I lived alone I would have no rule as well, but my kids were turning it on and almost insuring it stayed on at random channels at least 8 hours a day...AND THEY WEREN'T WATCHING IT! They would just turn it on watch for 10 minutes and walk away. If I turned it off they would walk over and turn it on and then leave.

Well, personally, I wouldn't turn to the Shroomery for parenting advice in this instance. You seem to have this parenting thing down pretty well already. I think you already know what to do.

I know, but input is always helpful. Plus, getting parental advice from drug fiends is usually an interesting read

Excellent choice. As you have stated, the television, due to its nature, is a very passive activity, which does not require much of any choice or decision in the observer. Requiring that "interacting" with it is a consciously-planned activity will maintain the conscious choice in viewing the material.

Perhaps the television is why Western civilization is very incapable of making effective choices. It sounds like you are at the focal point of reversing that trend, Huehue, and I've definitely got to state that it is much, much appreciated. The ability for us to consciously think and act is long over-due. We need a new Renaissance.

You have never used drugs? I am deeply sorry then. I am an unrepentant drug fiend myself....even if I never tripped again I would still say the same.

What are you talking about? :stoned: He already decided what to do. He isn't asking for advice on the subject, but presenting the circumstance to us to consider. I think he's looking more for opinions and ideas than advice as to how to act. Huehue is a master of the power of intention.

I guess it depends upon your chosen definition of fiend:

  1.
        a. An evil spirit; a demon.
        b. The Devil; Satan.
        c. A diabolically evil or wicked person.
  2. Informal One who is addicted to something: a dope fiend.
  3. Informal One who is completely absorbed in or obsessed with a given job or pastime: a crossword-puzzle fiend.
  4. Informal One who is particularly adept at something: a fiend with computers.

I'll take #4 FTW.

My second choice is B

I prefer to transcend habit and operate purely on conscious choice eventually, but it takes a lot of personal power to do so.

Conscious choice is not as efficient, rather like democracy.
